snakie - I cannot tell a lie (to you...): I did drop acid before I wrote that. In fact it's been about a year ago now, and I'm still trying to come down...

Alas, didn't make me a guitar genius though. Maybe I should tighten my headband.

On the way to work, I was thinking (instead of paying attention to the road...) about what makes a great guitar player, which lead me to think about what makes Hendrix head and shoulders above the rest, and here's what I came up with: his personality, and LSD.

One thing most rock guitar players have in common is an ego the size of Manhattan (some are larger when they're compensating for lack of technical skill). Hendrix had a huge ego no doubt, but it was balanced by a genuine humility and lack of self-consciousness. My specific example of this is when most players are playing and find a flash if inspiration, there is a brief moment of realization of what has just passed through them, a pause between the flow of inspiration and creating before allowing the next moment to occur (insert scrunchy face here). Imagine speaking, stopping to think about what you've said, then moving on to the next sentence.

There are lots of great guitarists and other artists who reach that space of pure inpiration, but no one has sustained that open channel for long periods of time as Jimi did. Interestingly enough, in the new documentary Festival Express, I saw Janis Joplin do it for long stretches, where there was no guile between her muse and the microphone.

But I digress... this rant is specifically about guitar players, and mostly rock guitar players. Jazz players are on the whole and by definition able to open themselves to extended moments of inspiration, but also tend to be too cerebral to let their "freak flag fly", so to speak. Rock guitar players almost have too much knowledge these days to let themselves go. As soon as the serendipitous muse strikes, their first instinct is to recreate that moment. That's the moment the muse moves on.

Why was Jimi able to avoid this? Most of all, I think it was his personality. When Jimi put down his guitar he was self-effacing and humble. He *never* called himself the "best", and generally like to point out many other great players when it was brought up. When Mr. Hendrix was creating at his best (the solo on "Machine Gun" as one example), there was no pause where he realized what had come through his fingers. The ideas flowed through him but weren't judged (like Parker and Coltrane) - that was up to the audience. And as the audience was processing was had just occurred he was already channeling his next sentence. Hendrix wasn't overly impressed with what had just passed through his speakers, but used it as a reference for his next statement, very much like a conversation. This is what most technically proficient guitar players never grok, and why very good players never seem to say much musically as they patch together impressive but meaningless strings of notes and riffs.

"What about the LSD you" you ask? Well, though Jimi's temperment was the most important factor, LSD, when used in the right amount and situation, very much stimulates creativity, cirumvents the ego, and most importantly to this diatribe, keeps you in the moment. What happened a second ago doesn't matter as much as what is happening now. Now, I'm not saying every guitar player or artist should drop acid, but as a musician there is no better lesson.

Anyway... this is all imho, and I didn't mean to turn this into a dissertation. It's just stuff I'm thinking about...

Great and thoughtful article.

Had a great time last night watching Pretzel Logic perform at the Baked Potato. Hung with David for the part of the 2nd set that my short leash allowed me to hear. Got to hear Your Gold Teeth and YGTII. Quite a thrill. The other real thrill was in the first set, when they played Here at the Western World. It's called Gulf Coast Jazz starring Don Reitan, pianist. This album features Jay Cave on bass, 'Babe Choir' Victoria Cave's father. If anyone knows more about this 'type' of jazz or the whatabouts of Miss Cave's vocal performances these days .....

Players:

Don Reitan - Piano
Mike Serpas - Trumpet
Jay Cave - Bass
Rick Bell - Tenor Saxophone
Lee Charlton - Drums
Featuring Jackie Henderson - Vocals

This CD is in some ways a landmark. It is a culmination of sorts of fifteen years of modern jazz on the Gulf Coast. The charts and ensemble work are relentlessly funky, showing the influence of the Jazz Messengers and Horace Silver's groups. Reitan writes ever-energetic lines and Serpas is outstanding. If Bix had lived to play modern jazz, on a good day he would have sounded like this.

*from Jazz in New Orleans: The Post-War Years through 1970
by Charles Suhor, Jazz Historian
Scarecrow Press (forthcoming)

In 1961 Bubba Spencer, owner of the jazz club `Chez Joey where Reitan and his band were playing regularly, made a request to Cosimois Studio in New Orleans to send a remote engineer to the `Chez Joey to make a live recording. The intended album was never made, but the master has been in the hands of Lee Charlton for the past 38 years. It has been a dream of Charlton to release these tapes to the public. "And now, it is my great pleasure to invite everyone to share in the vitality of that time and place, and to recognize, once again, that as with all great music, jazz is timeless" says Charlton. Don Reitan, along with so many great players, is unfortunately no longer with us. This CD is dedicated to him and many of the great players from the Gulf Coast jazz scene, John Propst, Carol Cunningham, Benny Clements, Joe "Cheeks" Mandry, Kenny Ward, Rusty Mayne, Bill Patey. Bob Teeters and Sam Spivey.

WK Trio is not really like much like SD, and Will Lee was in the bass chair as the group's regular bassist, Tim Lefebvre, was at another committment. I have been listening to WK for many years, from the days back in the late 80s when he played with Victor Bailey a lot. I think WK's conviction not to be held hostage to a record label is exemplary and I wish more players of this caliber would have the courage. PS Ted Baker will be playing at 55 on August 31; but we all know the real deal in 55 is Mike Stern, with DC on drums! LOL>

Stephan, thank you for speaking with us, I love that tune, for those of you who don't know it, it's called "Catch Me When I Fall" and it's the last cut on the really wonderful compilation that Jazz Magazine stuck into the "Women of Jazz" issue last summer. Lots of great women on there, Diane Shurr doing, "Stay Away From Bill," great heartfelt rendition of "I Love You Porgy" by someone, darn I forget who now. So, so many others. Lyn Leon's cut is the gem, however. It starts out with this very sexy hi-hat and snare in 4, I mean crisp as a military march, Carolyn's crystalline pipes cut in there for a verse then it jumps to double time with, jeez, forgive my ignorance here but, I guess it's some sort of glass vibraphone sounding instrument doing this counterpoint synchopation thingy. Lots of tension, Carolyn is a vamp. I keep wondering why Lyn Leon doesn't bust out here in the states with a club tour. Ya know, our Carolyn, (we've been watching her back up SD for years, she kinda grew up before our eyes), sings great, she looks great and she moves, well, you've all seen her, so beautifully. Incredible body language: sensual but never ever undignified. And Lyn Leon mirror that cool charm. My thanks and congratulations for that wonderfully moody piece.

One question, "...we can ride right past 11," a line from the tune which I take to mean 10 is the most anything can be cranked up to but you and me, babe, can ride way past the numbers on any dial. Actually, that's not a question. It's the meaning I've ascribed to the lyric and I'm sticking to it. Thanks again Stephan.

1. What was it like to perform as a supporting act for Peter Gabriel, was it a totally
different experience compared to your usual performances?

yes it was..... there were about 10.000 people, I've never played "my music" in front of so many people ... and they liked it ...

2. If you think back a few years, how would you describe Lyn Leon now, anno 2004 ...?

years ago, we didn't know if anybody would like our music, today we are waiting for the release of "Glass Lounge" on 27th of September in Europe through SPV, and maybe we are supporting a big singer on his European tour...?!?!

3. How did you meet Carolyn Leonhart?

the story how we met Carolyn Leonhart:

the Swiss Percussion Group had a programm with stones, glass and clay. We wanted to do a CD and thought it would be great to have a singer. We know Gil Golgstein, because he had written a piece for the Swiss Percussion Group, so I called him and he recommended Carolyn. She came over for the weekend and after that we decided to do a cd together. So we recorded GLASS SONGS by Swiss Percussion Group & Carolyn Leonhart (the album is sold out). Mats (Matthias Eser) and I wrote all the compositions. Then we had problems with the rights concerning the poetry, so Carolyn had to do some re-writing. We had ro record again and that's when we said: let's tour with this music. People just loved it, so we figured, why not, let's do another CD, so that's the story behind Glass Lounge. We then changed the name of Swiss Percussion Group into Lyn Leon.

4. What is the ambition of a group like Lyn Leon, what are the goals?

the goal is to play our music all over the world, it's more a dream right now .....

5. And what are the ideas behind your music?

maybe what John Bishop of OriginArts Seattle USA said: "I love the fact that you guys have taken the art form and applied it in an area where people might actually end up hearing and appreciating it!?

ok?

and David, yes, that is Lyn Leon, do you like it?

Stephan Diethelm from the group Lyn Leon will answer some questions.

1. What was it like to perform as a supporting act for Peter Gabriel, was it a totally different experience compared to your usual performances?
2. If you think back a few years, how would you describe Lyn Leon now, anno 2004 ...?
3. How did you meet Carolyn Leonhart?
4. What is the ambition of a group like Lyn Leon, what are the goals?
5. And what are the ideas behind your music?

These are the first 5 questions. If anyone else wants to know anything about Lyn Leon or Carolyn Leonhart, feel free to ask!

Relaxed and polished

A mellow voice and cool sounds. LYN LEON provide both. In their suitcase they're also carrying their new CD GLASS LOUNGE. In this lounge time and space are forgotten - letting oneself sink into a chair and get carried along by the musical current is the slogan.

The trance-engendering sweetness springs from singer Carolyn Leonhart's vocal artistry. At once bewitchingly lascivious and dynamically energetic she sings stories of passing passions and tender love-tides. Yet more fascination is in the intricate sound patterns and the moving and, at times, trendy beats. In this way the lounge presents itself in an ever-changing acoustic décor. The result, however, are always sophisticated sounds of surreal beauty.

There is no classical band-history they can offer; Lyn Leon are far from being ordinary anyway. There is, for one, vocalist Carolyn Leonhart from New York. Her home are the clubs of that world capital, jazz and pop having been laid in her cradle. And then there are her two accompanying musicians, Stephan Diethelm and Matthias Eser. The two percussionists live in the Swiss 'Mittelland', had had classical training and have since played themselves through virtually all world rhythms. All the more exciting will it be when the three team up - musically.

With glass to new sounds
"Soft, unfamiliar music of tender beauty," jazz critic Christian Rentsch described the result in the Tages-Anzeiger. With Lyn Leon, singing, percussion and sounds produce a smooth blend of remarkable musical artistry. The atmosphere is relaxed, the songs are melodious and catchy. Despite its calm and mellow sound texture their new CD Glass Lounge comes with some neat if not to say respectable pop grooves. First there is Carolyn Leonhart's warm voice. At once bewitchingly lascivious and dynamically energetic she sings stories of passing passions and tender love- tides. Then there are the sophisticated sounds that take us away to the realms of melancholy. They mainly stem from instruments made of glass. So, the rubbing of wine glasses creates a kind of floating singing, while glass-marimbas surprise with bright sounds. Many of the instruments used by the musicians have been specially designed and developed in co-operation with the glass-blowing works at Hergiswil The glass as material, however, remains in the background, it just provides the basis for a new sound.

Singer takes home Grammy awards
Behind the seeming lightness lies hidden what may be called a profound musical skill. In recent years, the two percussionists Stephan Diethelm and Matthias Eser have again and again attracted wide attention with outstanding musical projects, e.g. when working with the classical flutist Matthias Ziegler or with jazz pianist Christoph Baumann. The New Yorker singer Carolyn Leonhart, for her part, has been granted an honour of the highest order in pop music: With the Band Steely Dan she has been awarded no less than three Grammies this year. For their current live performances the three musicians are supported by bass-player Michael Chylewski und drummer Kaspar Rast - both equally renowned in our musical landscape. Together they fill the Glass Lounge with relaxed excitement.

What once began will go on
Stephan Diethelm and Matthias have been using glass in their music for quite some time now. Eight years ago, as members of the Swiss Percussion Ensemble and with the help of the glass-blowing works at Hergiswil, the two had put together a large number and range of musical instruments from glass objects. The programme they had at the time, Gravitational Sound - Shimmering Force, was followed three years ago by the CD Glass Songs, enhanced by the voice of Carolyn Leonhart. And now, under the name of Lyn Leon the project has, for the time being at least, reached the end of this development. The new CD is the consistent continuation of Glass Songs, yet Glass Lounge does still lead in a new direction - and presents songs of almost surreal beauty."

I used Maxine as a handle initially in here, then felt it was a safe place to let the guard down and use my real name. As far as Kami vs. Nightfly, I think Kami is lighthearted and fun, while Nightfly is a masterwork, beautifully recorded and deeply moving, particularly the title cut. My favorite line is "I wish I had a heart of ice.." as it hits the nail on the head for me. I can somehow identify with Lester and his melancholy. For me it's tea and Pall Mall's, though.

Bouncing between threads, or walking between raindrops, as it were....

SH: You could do a movie with those three songs and title it "Down and Almost Out in NYC". The booze, the drugs, the lack of women, the feeling sorry for oneself (partially), but not quite out yet. There is still some small spark of life burning in the characters and yes, to a certain degree I feel the life of Donald shining through them.

David/Gretchen/SN: I like Kamakiriad, but it is no Nightfly. Definitely more laid back in it's feel and tone and as I have said before, I could listen to the end of "On the Dunes" for hours, especially where that sax kicks in. Sigh....

i love Kama...and i feel it's sort of "techno-popish - futuristic funk" except for On the Dunes (what a sad and beautiful song) and Florida Room (i still think this is Donald's "I'm so in love with Libby" song)...

Definitely something strange about Kama. Connected to Nightfly also somehow. It sounds to me like there are little gremlins running around in the Kamakiriad recordings. OK, maybe it's just an LSD flashback but this is what I see. I like Donald's recurring theme about "Tomorrow's Girls." They are taking over, maybe it's for the best. Steely Dan's female characters are nothing if not emancipated (yikes to say the least!) and, at times, right in your face. They're unstoppable, they just run right over you. Beautiful and dangerous, kiss you deadly.

t: I don't think so...The sonics on Pretzel are better (in the final recording). Plus Michael McDonald was hired for the Pretzel TOUR, AFTER the album was recorded and shipped. I read that Porcaro just stayed out way too late one night - was a no show (not the first time), so they used veteran session guy Hal Blaine (Pet Sounds, etc.) on the drums. Omartian, Eliot Randall, Rainey, the usual Katy Lied suspects are all there.

C: It's supposed to be...it's a series of 50s SiFi dream sequences (REM sleep)...and dawn approaches by Florida Room, On the Dunes, and Teahouse...it's really weird on DVD-A.

Or maybe as a result of the master tape glitch, they used a track left over from the Pretzel sessions (judging by the non-track-specific players listed).

One thing I've got to say again, the lastest remaster of CBaT is just outstanding. There's so much clarity and separation it blows away a lot of modern cd's. It blows away some of the rest of the Dan' catalog as far as sonics go. There's not as much going on in the mix as on later albums, so maybe that helps, but wow... some more.

Any World was recorded without Porcaro - i think late in the katy lied sessions. My guess is that it was last in the big master tape that was creamed by the noise reduction "glitch."

I always wondered about the volume on that one. You are right, it had to be deliberate, cause they would have fixed it (along with what they had to do to fix the other gremlin problems on Katy Lied). Gonna check out Citizen 1 right now and see if your other theory holds. Twin songs, hmmmm.... :-)

ahh... the refreshing quench of information...

David - thanks. That jogged some brain cells. I think I've seen one. That definitely looks easier to play than a traditional sitar.

lp, angel, clas - the lack of volume is consistant over all the versions I've owned of CBaT. And good catch there angel - Any World definitely has the same volume issue. It's almost as if those songs were recorded at the same time and inserted into the albums. Seems odd with the Immortal's penchant for sonic perfection. Maybe it's intentional, like that old Jedi mind trick of backing off the volume just a bit to draw the listener in. I know it's worked on me all these years.

Hey lp, I missed ya. Good to read you again.

Hey I have a question for everyone: is an electric sitar (that 'sound' on Dirty Work) shaped like a sitar or a guitar?

Oh, and does everyone reach to turn up the volume at the begining of Kings when playing CBaT? I think it's mastered slightly lower than Do It Again and Dirty Work before it, and Midnight Cruiser after it. Seems like I've been making the same motion during the same part of the album for almost 30 years.

LP: I almost posted my original comment with the heading of "angel posting as lp", cause I KNEW you would care.

I met her once, in 1983, when I went to a fundraiser type dinner. She had just finished the show Dinner at Julia's and this was sort of a kickoff event. We brought 5 family members and we all had the time of our lives. She was a pure pleasure to be with, telling stories of her life and (of course) tips on cooking. A great loss.

Scott Miller and I thought it was a cool song. The next day my mother was dropping me off at school and Reelin' came on the radio and I said, "I like that song", and my mother said, "You do?" as in "Where the hell have you heard that before".

http://www.ferenzik.com Hello all - checked back in and saw a few more questions for me, so here goes...

for angel

1) Why did you get into music and what is your best memory of your career?

When I was a kid, I just gravitated towards music. I liked cartoon music, especially Warner Brother cartoon music, and TV show music of the early 60's -- all that jazzy spy vs. spy and police thriller stuff. Music just seemed to make more sense than politics or religion, or just about anything; plus, it showed me that there were other ways to express yourself than merely talking, writing, or making diagrams on paper.

The best memory of my career? I'll just pick one: I saw The Who play a concert in 1968, and it was pretty great.

2) On the Donald/Todd possible tour, what do you see as the places where their musical vision intersects?

Well, I'd have to wait until I see them play together to figure that one out! I'm only guessing, but I think it'll be funky.

for Herman Roovers

Question for John Ferenzik: saw you playing with Todd and the other guys in Holland - Bospop - Weert and start a discussion about the Liars- outfit. Do you like your outfit or is it to pleasure Todd (and some fans)?

It was really a thrill to play Bospop. Personally, I'm not a big costume fan. But it helps in keeping with the themes of Todd's tunes for the Liars tour, and after all my griping, it is fun to dress up and pretend to be a bit of a character. Makes it more theatrical. The downside: You get to sweat a lot.

Ciao for now...

Wednesday, August 11th 2004 - 11:32:19 AM

http://www.ferenzik.com Hey, more questions via email! Cool! here goes...

6. Yet another big name, Frank Gambale on 'Wild Man of Borneo'. How come it seems these great musicians keep a low profile, or are they musicians for musicians mainly?

Well, Frank was cool. He happened to be passing through town. I asked if he could play, and he graciously agreed to do so. I was thrilled to have someone of that stature play on my stuff.

But to answer your question, I don't think any musician sets out to keep a low profile, or only play music that other musicians will like to the exclusion of everyone else. If what you do happens to catch on, you're Snoop Dogg or Yanni or Britney or Metallica, and if it doesn't you're more like, well, me.

7. From your point of view, is there any resemblance in the creative minds of Donald Fagen and Todd Rundgren?

I wouldn't be able to say, since I've never had the opportunity to spend any time with Mr. Fagen. But if I had to guess, I say they're both musical, so there's got to be common ground.

8. How did it all start for you, the music ..... how old were you when you started playing an instrument?

I was 5 years old when I started piano lessons. I was a terrible student. But I liked the sound of a piano and I'd noodle around a lot. Later on, I picked up playing guitar when I was about 13 or so, after my younger brother kind of gave up on it. I started on the guitar because The Beatles were such an influence, and probably because the guitar looked cooler. Besides, at that point, girls seems more interested in guitarists, and I was becoming more aware of girls...you get the picture.

9. Anything you'd like to share about your musical development and such is welcome!

Thanks for the invitation. I don't know what to say... I hope that doesn't mean I've finished developing musically!

some goofy ones:

10. Do you like food? Do you like to cook?

Do fish swim? Yes I like food. Probably too much. With regards to cooking: I like to burn stuff on the grill outside when weather permits.

11. How would an ideal United States of America look in your perspective?

It would be in the form of a circle, with more exits and better lighting.

12. When you're away on tour, do you get to see a lot of the countries you visit?

Not really. Sometime you get a day or two off, and you can go sightseeing and/or do your laundry. That's a luxury. Mostly you just get to experience the varying qualities of hotel services, restaurants, airports, rental cars and tours buses.

13. What's your most ideal venue? small crowd, bigger audiences ....?

I think an ideal venue is anyplace where the music sounds good, acoustically. After that, it's creature comforts. Are the dressing rooms comfortable or do they smell like sweaty feet (or worse)? It's the little things. As far as the audience goes, if they're supportive - or at least, not throwing anything - then that's good. Size doesn't matter.

14. the world of john ferenzik. you got a couple of albums and cd's out now. are there any musicians you got on your list, people you'd like to work with?

I don't have a list - that would mean planning! Seriously, I've been lucky to work with people whose company I really enjoy. I'm thankful and deeply grateful to all the musicians who have played on my stuff. And, if I can get 'em to do some more, that would be great.

...Finally, thanks for the opportunity to spout off! I'll check back later to see what's up.

Ciao

http://www.ferenzik.com ... and here are some answers for y'all.

1. Do you by any chance own any Steely Dan records?

Yep - most if not all of 'em.

2. Which song would be your favorite?

Wow. Depends on what day it is. Today's favorite: "Babylon Sisters." Why? Because you've got to shake it baby.

3. Did you ever play any of their songs?

I used to play "Black Friday", "The Fez", "Peg", "Deacon Blues" and "Kid Charlemagne" in cover bands back in the 70s. I'm probably forgetting a few. Anyway, playing a Steely Dan song was a relief from playing stuff like "Car Wash" and "Disco Inferno" in clubs back then.

4. How did you get to meet Todd Rundgren?

I met Todd through Jesse Gress (a dear friend and fantastic guitarist) after Jesse had joined to play on Todd's Second Wind Tour. (I think that Jesse may have given Todd an audition tape where Jesse had played on some of my tunes, just prior to getting the gig - so that's pretty flattering.) Later down the line, when "The Individualist" tour needed a keyboard/guitarist, I was lucky enough to be hired on. But aside from all this, I was always a fan, dating back to when Todd played with The Nazz - I just always liked the tunes and that guitar playing.

5. How did you get to meet Mike Keneally?

I'd seen Mike play with Frank Zappa a number of times, but never got to really meet up with him until after the infamous "Zappa's Universe" gig in New York City. That was such a grand and ambitious event - hard to describe to anyone who wasn't there. Again, Jesse was the connection, and we were able to get backstage and chat a bit, and then we hung out afterwards. When there was a chance to have him play on my CD "House of Boris" I jumped on it to make it happen. He's just a fantastically creative and talented person. Oh yeah! Did I forget to mention, "nice?" He's nice.

... that's all for now.

Thanks John for dropping by! Perhaps some of the Mizar visitors can draw up a list of Q's to ask John?

I went looking for some "source" material and I found that the Mizar5 creator, had definitely done some homework. So, after reading these, I just felt like it would be better that I just post them here, for a refresh of memory. Maybe sometime I will do some parody work on it, but for now, here is the spirit of Mizar 5. Thanks to Donald and Walter.

___________________________________________

Have you heard about the boom on Mizar Five
People got to shout to stay alive
They don't even have policeman one
Doesn't matter where you been or what you've done
Do you have a dark spot on your past
Leave it to my man he'll fix it fast
Pepe has a scar from ear to ear
He will make your mug shots disappear
CHORUS:
You zombie
Be born again my friend
Won't you sign in stranger

Do you like to take a yo-yo for a ride
Zombie I can see you're qualified
Walk around collecting Turkish union dues
They will call you sir and shine your shoes
Or maybe you would like to see the show
You'll enjoy the Cafe D'Escargot
Folks are in a line around the block
Just to see her do the can-can-Jacques

CHORUS

Love or leave her, yellow fever
Sure, it's all in the game
And who are you
Just another scurvy brother

The color in here is Indian Red. It's the ideal color for stardust.
I invited John Ferenzik, he's in Todd Rundgren's band. Who knows he might find the time to swing by and share some stardust stories with us.

http://www.davidmooremusic.com Maxine, I'm also thrilled to hear of Donald and Todd. Maybe Pat Metheny?Billy Joel? I'd also hope Walters' hand would be in there too.
Also very nice to see some familiar people here.

This is a nice place, sets a tone for civility and talking to other like minded individuals in a kind and respectful way. Hey, we're all SD fans, we should stick together. I almost want to bring wine and crostini! I wonder who else Donald has lined up for his solo effort, as he was supposed to be recording with several artists. If he went with Rundgren as one of them, who knows who else could be in there? I'd love to see him with a variety of artists across the board, from jazz, hip hop and rock. Pharell from the Neptunes and NERD has listed SD as one of his favorites. It would be cool to see him put that neo soul influence into Donald's Rock and Soul concept. Of course, Donald and BRuuuuuuuuubeck on a track would be musical heaven. Any ideas from others for "dream duos?"

Has anyone heard the title song from Bourne Identity/Supremacy? Performed by Moby, it is called "Extreme Ways" and it sounds to me just like the song by Bob Seeger "Turn the Page". Am I going nuts, or what?

Todd Rundgren has numerous compositions worth listening to. The late Robert Palmer recorded Rundgren's 'Can We Still Be Friends?' and this is just one example. Rundgren's bosa nova CD 'With A Twist' is fabulous.
Like Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Frank Zappa and some others, this Todd Rundgren stuck to his own thing. And therefore there's kinship.

I like the color in here, too, and the pic. I'm wondering who the host/hostess is, too. So what does everyone think about the Donald/Todd Rundgren story? I never would have imagined Donald and Todd would work together, but now that I think of it, a few of Todd's compositions sound like they could have been done by SD, especially "Real Man." Very melancholy combination, I think.

Welcome sh. This website is based on a collective of five minds who once joined together to share some personal space and find alternative pastime in the Steely Dan online world. So it's safe to say these five friends provided for the inspiration to build this Mizar5. Enjoy being here.

That's funny, you are reading my mind. I was just thinking about golf myself. Those who are not on vacation are golfing somewhere, except for me of course. Somehow I can't picture Louis as a golfer, but more of a techno-genius, a little too nerd-ish for the game of golf. He's probably taking his mother and aunt on a tour of Europe for the summer, that's why things are stalled over at DF.com.

I love that picture. Just the right accent.

I feel welcome here and that is nice.

Regarding Donald Fagen and his possible tour next year with Todd Rungren. I am not quite sure what to think of that. Isn't Todd the one who sang "Hello it's Me?

To plug or pull the plug, that is indeed the question. Thank you Maxine, for gracing us with a visit. I don't know about you, but I am kind of excited about the idea of this Donald Fagen character, Lewis Fairlawn. Somehow I picture him playing golf. I can see him wearing white pants, an impeccable taste this Lewis Fairlawn must have. Hm. He must be a golfplayer, or else the DF website would be up and running now, wouldn't it?
