'Bodhisattva. Bodhisattva. Two seconds of relief in here and there's that music again. Steely Dan playing again. And it's not only in here it plays. Objects in the Mirror
Thousands of Fingers
A Tribute to Steely Dan
The Center for the Arts is at 314 W. Main St. in Grass Valley, CA.

Objects in the Mirror returns to the Center with a tribute to one of rock's most challenging and adventuresome bands - Steely Dan.
This musical Costume Halloween Show will feature Objects in the Mirror, Major Dudes Horn Section, with Grant Reeves and Lee Elderton, plus the Babylon Sisters on vocals: Lorraine Gervais and Beth Moore-Haines. Saul Rayo is the Master of Ceremonies, and other local artists will be in attendance! Tunes from thirty years of Steely albums and CDs with a 13 piece concert band. This will be a big, fun show and only for the one night - Steely Dan.
Two years ago five gifted musicians forged their musical talents. The result is a breathtaking jazz fusion band that's perhaps the hottest sound up this way. Playing covers is long behind them as guitarist Perry Mills and bassist Pat Jacobsen, both prolific writers, have amassed a stable of creative originals seething with improvisation and spontaneity set in a grooving background cast by drummer Mark McCartney. Add provocative percussion by Kit Bailey and the impeccable keyboards of Bob Villwock and you have a formidable wicked blend of magical jazz.

Amethyst Secrets - TDFNV1, will be available online and in bookstores round the world within 30 days:

"Summer, 1981. In the basement of a house on Long Island Sound, a group of intensely dedicated, fanatical fans of one of the most important groups in the history of popular music have gathered to form a fan club. What happens there that day creates relationships and bonds - as well as mysteries and entanglements - which will, over the course of the next twenty odd years, serve to create experiences of great joy and sorrow, despair and hope, fulfillment and wonder, discontent and solace. This brief overture to a much longer story introduces the people whose destinies will be played out in the volumes to follow. The eternal themes of ritual and ceremony mix with more localized issues of the arts, love, politics, society and philosophy to form a background against which the characters move; to form a mirror in which we can see the reflections of ourselves."

Good morning, St. Al, in Euro timezone! Thanks for the link and yes, perhaps the forums each have their own angles, still, NOT KNOWING where things were headed in Sign In Stranger was big part of its charm and all of these new ones, including the Blue, would never have risen without the Yellow.
Anyway, THIS way we can hop from one board to another, like it's all different rooms in that big old Yellow house :-)
Your political debates or conversations in either NYB's place or Peter Q's are interesting to read and there's a lot on Dutch television as well regarding politics and the upcoming election. Someone uttered this not so bad idea a while back, that if Bush wants to control the world, other nations/people should also have a right to vote for him, or against him.
There's a Dutch TV show NOVA situated in New York and it's got interesting topics and guests. Like representatives from Operation Truth. Anyway, here's a couple of links that might show how the media in this country digest it all.
Ton Vriens is a Dutch cameraman and reporter/ journalist who has been living in the US for 20 years. His son Thomas enlisted in the American army right after 9/11 and recently got injured in Iraq. Ton Vriens joined a group of parents and relatives who want the army out of Iraq and get their sons and daughters home, safe.
And like St. Al said, people tend to forget WHY the current administration failed, not just because of their foreign politics, but because they also forsake to run their own country properly, as solemnly pledged 4 years ago.

Faberge-eggs Songs
Saturday, October 23rd 2004 - 05:06:49 PM

Another band of postmodern sonic architecture and earthly toil has been making such Faberge-egg songs since the decade that Radiohead feels most suited to, the prog-happy 1970s. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's Steely Dan is the ne plus ultra of production perfectionism. Disappearing into the Reagan years' ether after 1980's Gaucho, Fagen and Becker returned with 2000's Two Against Nature sounding like they never left the studio. Still interweaving complex jazzy breaks and riffs into traditional-feeling R&B, Fagen and Becker rekindled their interest in older guys trying to score with younger -- in some cases too young -- women, and won their first Grammy.
Arguably out to prove Nature wasn't a one-off, Fagen and Becker are already back with Everything Must Go, by which they must mean everything that made them entertaining. The songs remain so ascetically smooth and clean you could operate in them, but the hooks don't swing quite as nice, and for some reason the lad-mag cleverness and obtuse sarcasm of their lyrics is gone. Creepy as it may be, a middle-aged Fagen singing about an out-of-work musician having naughty thoughts about his cousin "in those little tops and tight Capris," or a painter invigorated by his runaway Lolita and hoping to sweet talk her into a three-way with her friend, is deliciously risqué -- especially when they occur in music that recalls the jingles to every laundry detergent commercial ever made.
Go sounds like successful, middle-aged businessmen having a midlife crisis and cashing in while they're ahead. The lead track informs all metaphorical shoppers that they better get the "Sunset Special/ on all the standard stuff" now because it's last call at "The Last Mall." "Things I Miss Most" captures a recently divorced man's laments, checking off his yearnings -- the Audi TT, the house on the Vineyard, the comfy Eames chair, the '54 Strat. And the title song chronicles a company owner having a going out of business sale, calling to "dissolve the corporation/ in a pool of margaritas."
Given the recent spate of corporate malfeasance, Go's song snapshots may be Fagen and Becker's typically wry examination of men's foibles, but that doesn't explain the unbridled glee with which they do it. Fagen has always sounded like the perpetual 40-year-old, hovering on middle age but still close enough to youth to taste it. On Go Fagen merely delivers his lines, never accentuating anything to reveal he's sardonically aware of their content. And if you take away the juxtaposition of Steely Dan's witty lyrics and how they're delivered, it all sounds the same -- like incidental music from television's Taxi.
Dismissive, you say? The next time you're in an elevator, a department store dressing room, on hold with the dentist's office, or languishing in some other quotidian limbo, see how long it takes before you hear a Steely Dan tune. Smoother-than-smooth jazz Muzak loves these guys -- despite the odd meters, the on-a-dime jazzy breaks, the overall structural precision, and the sophisticated, narrative lyrics. Steely Dan reduces down to ambient wallpaper like it was made for it.

Not your ordinary stew!
Wednesday, October 20th 2004 - 08:51:44 PM

Been listening to Cauldron, produced by Walter Becker. It's John Beasley's CD and it's got an impressive line up of fellow-musicians. And it sounds really good, that ain't a surprise, right? This CD is from 1991 and it reeled me back into time. So now i sit here, feeling homesick. I guess i was simply listening from the heart, or from the gut and as soon as the first notes on "Beehave yourself" kick in, it takes the listener by the hand, slowly, it's a joyful warm, CARE FREE and optimistic journey, all the way through the 9 tracks. Hopeful as well, and we could sure need hopeful in these autumn days when elections and politics seem to have the upper hand. Well, the Beas has an upper hand for almost an hour and it's a listening experience that does lift the spirit, truly!

So here i am, feeling homesick because the times have changed, and i find myself longing for those days, when life was brewing passionate and it pounded flirting with the unexpected, they call that youth, don't they?

Cauldron also feels like a favorite coat you never wanna leave in the wardrobe when out on the town socializing or attending cultural events. Afraid it might get lost.
One could easily warm up to the danceable rhythms of this album, or slow down when a tranquil moment in Run and Hide makes you keep that vision of a day awakening in the midst of Spring, the essence of life unfolding as you pass the same old buildings and people hurrying to their destinations. It's this sense of having been here before, a familiar feeling with a re-kindled spark for the past, the present and the future. Listening from the heart does that to ya!

Yes, the familiarity of Cauldron makes it what it is, a large, deep, open pot in which things are boiled. On a cloud off to Catalina, track 5, or enjoying the dialogues in track 6, 11:11.
John Pattitucci, Dean Parks, Bob Sheppard, Ricky Lawson, Munyungo Jackson, Bill Summers, Darryl Jackson, Ricky Minor, Peter Erskine and Steve Tavaglione.
And a fine producing/engineering crew ofcourse!

Thank you, Jason, for signing in and giving your permission to use your drawings, even after the fact. I know, i should have asked first, but i was somewhat flabbergasted and taken with the idea of that project. There's Steely Dan tribute or coverbands, there's new bands with material and styles of their own, however influenced by the music of Steely Dan and that's about it when it comes to the 'side effects'. Clas Lundkvist from Sweden painted his impressions of some songs, but yours is an entire collection, it also reads like a comic book and the drawings portray your view of the songs. Therefore very personal and individual. Which is always interesting.
So thanks again!

John Beasley is in Japan at the moment, for a series of gigs in one of the finest venues in Tokyo, the Sweet Basil 139. He works with Carlito Del Puerto (bass), Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez (drums) and Chie Ayado

This classy, up-market venue stages pop, rock, jazz and classical concerts. The pop and rock artists featured tend to have made their mark in the sixties and seventies. It presents all genres of jazz from smooth jazz to fusion to classical music with the focus on recitals or chamber music. There is formal dinner seating for 270 and standing room for 500. In addition, there is a bar counter and outdoor terrace with seating for 40. The food is excellent.

And now for something to take you away from those political discussions:

YOGI BERRA EXPLAINS JAZZ

Interviewer: "What do expect is in store for the future of jazz
guitar?"

Yogi: "I'm thinkin' there'll be a group of guys who've never met
talkin'
about it all the time.."

Interviewer: Can you explain jazz?

Yogi: I can't, but I will. 90% of all jazz is half improvisation. The
other half is the part people play while others are playing something
they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the
wrong part, it's right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you
play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong.

Interviewer: I don't understand.

Yogi: Anyone who understands jazz knows that you can't understand it.
It's too complicated. That's what's so simple about it.

Interviewer: Do you understand it?

Yogi: No. That's why I can explain it. If I understood it, I
wouldn't know anything about it.

Interviewer: Are there any great jazz players alive today?

Yogi: No. All the great jazz players alive today are dead. Except
for the ones that are still alive. But so many of them are dead, that the ones
that are still alive are dying to be like the ones that are dead. Some
would kill for it.

Interviewer: What is syncopation?

Yogi: That's when the note that you should hear now happens either
before or after you hear it. In jazz, you don't hear notes when they happen because
that would be some other type of music. Other types of music can be jazz,
but only if they're the same as something different from those other
kinds.

Interviewer: Now I really don't understand.

Yogi: I haven't taught you enough for you to not understand jazz that
well.

Beautiful area and a wonderful time of year to visit it.

Dr. Wu: I too was in NY last weekend and totally enjoyed the weather there. Too bad music was not on my very short agenda (I was in town just over 1 day). The Leonharts at Smoke sounds like an awesome evening.

My computer was just upgraded and I can finally visit the Lyn Leon Site, that was mentioned a few weeks ago. Looking at the tour dates made me wonder how the glass pieces travel. It must be quite a deal, to bring along, for the tour gig. Talk about precious cargo....

greetings friends,

just a short report about my recent weekend in NYC. in addition to enjoying outstanding autumn weather and exceptional food, it was a music fest for 3 nights. saw the legendary roy hargrove at the village vanguard friday night - an amazing jazz quintet, worthy of their distinction in the jazz field and very much at home in the venue which has for such a long time hosted jazz greats.

on friday evening, the 55 bar was the venue and k.j. denhert the featured act - k.j. was doing her urban folk jazz thing as usual and the band was on fire, with sheryl bailey on guitar, ray levier on drums and mamadou ba on bass.

sunday evening was real mellow as carolyn leonhart brought a young but very talented jazz trio to the stage at two sets of carolyn's original compositions along with some solid arrangements of a few standards in the mix were the agenda for the evening ... carolyn's father, jay leonhart, well known jazz bass player was invited on stage to perform an original jay leonhart composition so it was a chance to see a jazz father/daughter vocal and bass duet which was quite a treat.

Sometimes i'm reminded of my first encounters with the music and the words, the lyrics. We all have our own little somethings that attracted us in the first place, right? So, these lyrics to Caves of Altamira really had it all, as listeners we witnessed the realms of an inner world, a flash of past-present-future. A loop in time, in an instant. Yes, i felt they KNEW the universe inside out without giving it another thought because it all came natural to them .....well, what do we know at age 13, eh? Anyway, i have to write an article about a museum, build to preserve this Roman bathhouse (see link above) and it dawned on me, again.

Whenever you find something that makes your soul pound beyond the understanding of fact, it must be a treasure to hold onto so in darker days it'll light up and show you the way!

CAVES OF ALTAMIRA

I recall when I was small
How I spent my days alone
The busy world was not for me
So I went and found my own
I would climb the garden wall
With a candle in my hand
I'd hide inside a hall of rock and sand

On the stone an ancient hand
In a faded yellow-green
Made alive a worldly wonder
Often told but never seen
Now and ever bound to labor
On the sea and in the sky
Every man and beast appeared
A friend as real as I

CHORUS:
Before the fall when they wrote it on the wall
When there wasn't even any Hollywood
They heard the call
And they wrote it on the wall
For you and me we understood

Can it be this sad design
Could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
And a beast without a name
Nothin' here but history
Can you see what has been done
Memory rush over me
Now I step into the sun

Hi Stevie!!!!!!!!

Yes Gee, I did attend the Sting concert on Wednesday and all in all, my family had a great time. My personal favorite parts were the 2 electronica type songs. "Send Your Love" opened the set and close to the end "Never Coming Home" had a huge stretched out jazz piano going on and on at the end. It was masterful! Obviously, being electronica type tunes, the drumming had Keith working real hard, but hey, he can do it and he did.
The weird part was when Sting went to sing the title track, "Sacred Love". He mentioned that the song was about love and Victoria's Secret. Then they break into the song and the background has these models doing stuff behind the band in their Victoria's Secret type clothes. Then this woman comes on stage in her long red dress with slit up to her hips and she provocatively dances all around Sting. Then for the finale, she rips off her skirt and is now in her Victoria's Secret underwear, I assume (I am in the nose bleed section, so we did not have a great view of this). Well the people in front of us must have decided that they had enough, cause they packed their bags and walked out. We had about 2/3rds of the show left. Their loss.

"Another superb cover showed a man asleep on a Boston bus station bench as skyscrapers and angry skies towered above him. Each building had a different animal's snarling head superimposed onto it. At the center of the cover was a king cobra about to strike at a mongoose on the neighboring edifice."

What's not that well known about this cover is that the skyscraper painting part of it was supposed to end up as the cover of a Van Morrison LP!
When Van abandoned that album the photographer behind the pic of the man asleep on the bench, Charlie Ganse, together with art director Ed Caraeff got the idea to mix the photo and painting and ending up with what became the cover for "The Royal Scam".

This is Steely Dan's fifth album and the first one where the group consisted of just Donald Fagen and Walter Becker with hired hands making up the rest of the musicians playing on the record.
The two of them are able to take the music where they want to without having other band members to listen to.
This album leaning towards guitar and rock with darker lyrics than before, will in a years time be followed by their commercial and arguably creative peak; the more jazz-influenced "Aja".

I have found no clear connection between the cover and the title track on "The Royal Scam", and if you read the liner notes by Donald & Walter in the CD-remaster you get the feeling that they didn't have much to do with the way the cover came out:

"Our happiness at this particular point in time would be ultracomplete save for one thing - namely, we have not as yet found a cover shot for the album. ...
Luckily for us, we are in Los Angeles where, more than anywhere else in the known universe, bad taste abhors a vacuum, and before long we find ourselves staring into the maw of the most hideous album cover of the seventies, bar none (excepting perhaps Can't Buy A Thrill). Why are those buildings turning into reptilian horrors, or vice versa? What squalid back alley of the human condition is meant to be invoked by this contused nightmare palette? What manner of man - ill-shod, unshaven - dares sleep peacefully through this fearsome and repulsive protomorph?"

there is another guitar on black cow that i hadn't noticed before
michael mcdonald really is amazing

i also learned that lindsey buckingham has a great voice that i hadn't appreciated - i always listen for his instrumental sound he brings to fleetwood mac

oh, i guess i should mention i had a baby - our third - a boy - Gabriel - he had a rough start, and not just the circumcision - but he's okay now - home on maternity leave and hooked back online at home - things have been crazy but all is settling in nicely and we are at the stage of wondering what we did before this baby came along

Until I found this info on the net, I had no clue about what 'Arcturus' stood for. So it was a nice surprise to suddenly read this name for the second time and find out its stellular status. And now I also learned it's Latin for 'northern'. I did think of the Poles some, but thoughts come and go as they please .....

"Among the very brightest of stars, shining with a soft orange light"-- yup, that's me! I am indeed "one of the three luminaries . . ." But what's this about lagging movement? deficient in metals? ceased the fusion of hydrogen in its core? Just what are you saying? Well (sigh), yeah, I do come from an older population of the galaxy . . .
But you see I am still magnetically active, and yes indeedy doo, I most definitely have a hard-to-observe "buried corona!"

.....

Stellular Trivia
Tuesday, September 21st 2004 - 05:47:51 PM
For our professor Arcturus:

ARCTURUS (Alpha Bootis). Among the very brightest of stars, shining with a soft orange light, Arcturus lights northern spring skies. It is one of three luminaries that partition the northern sky into very rough thirds, the others being summer's Vega and winter's Capella. Of the three, Arcturus, the Alpha star of the constellation Bootes, the Herdsman, is slightly the brighter, making it the brightest star of the northern hemisphere and the fourth brightest star of the entire sky, following only Sirius, Canopus, and Alpha Centauri. Arcturus, the "Bear Watcher," follows Ursa Major, the Great Bear, around the pole, "arktos" being the Greek name for "bear," from which our word "arctic" is derived by reference with the constellation of the Greater Bear. Arcturus is located at a distance of 37 light years, and became famous when its light was used to open the 1933 world's fair in Chicago, as that light had left the star at about the time of the previous Chicago fair in 1893. It is a classic orange class K (K1) giant star with a precisely defined surface temperature of 4290 degrees Kelvin. To the eye, it shines 113 times more brightly than our Sun. Its lower temperature, however, causes it to radiate considerable energy in the infrared. When this infrared radiation is taken into account, Arcturus actually shines almost twice as brightly, releasing 215 times more radiation than our Sun, from which we find a diameter 26 times solar, about a quarter the size of Mercury's orbit. Arcturus is close and large enough so that its angular diameter of 0.0210 seconds of arc can easily be measured, leading to a very similar direct determination of 25 times the solar dimension and providing nice confirmation of stellar parameters. Arcturus has a velocity relative to the Sun that is higher than other bright stars. Compared with the set of surrounding stars, which orbit the Galaxy on more or less circular orbits, it falls behind by about 100 kilometers per second (as do several others of the "Arcturus Group"). The lagging movement has long suggested that the star comes from an older population of the Galaxy. Consistently, it is somewhat deficient in metals, having only about 20 percent as much iron relative to hydrogen as found in the Sun. A more intriguing suggestion is that the star actually comes to us from a small galaxy that merged with ours some 5 to 8 billion years ago. As a giant, weighing in at around 1.5 times the mass of the Sun, it has ceased the fusion of hydrogen in its core. Though it is somewhat brighter than we would expect for a stable helium fusing star, helium fusion to carbon has probably already begun. Such stars are not expected to have magnetic activity like the Sun, but very weak X-ray emission suggests that Arcturus indeed is magnetically active and has a hard-to-observe "buried corona."

Ditto, about what's written concerning their relationship and personal lives.
It is interesting however, to read his take on the lyrics.
Shows there's a million ways for many minds to see-read-understand the stuff they wrote, eh? And this author's story is one of many. Not everyone has a way with words. I often come across internetpages where people simply mention Steely Dan's music as a reference or argument in conversations/discussions. Without being eloquent about it. But one gets the drift.

Fascinating book excerpt, with quite insightful interpretations of lyrics, but with so many bizarre and questionable conclusions regarding D and W's personal lives and relationships that I laughed throughout. Which is a segue to my point that Wadhams apparently hasn't read in SD interviews how D & W would routinely crack up with mirth while writing their lyrics; in one interview Fagen even stated that SD records were "comedy albums!" A good thing to keep in mind before attempting to attach "autobiographical confessions" to the words . . .

Interesting article. Too bad the guy can't get Dan history right.
I like his insite into Kid Charlemagne. lyrically vs. musically. Running with this authors suppositions, The reason this tune works so well on tour (as the one to kick the concert into overdrive) is the fact that the music is like the drug that Kid C was making in the song. Happens so, Tones shared some of his thoughts about Jimi Hendrix a while ago. It's for safekeeping in the Stardust Room, but what the heck, I'll re-post it:

On the way to work, I was thinking (instead of paying attention to the road...) about what makes a great guitar player, which lead me to think about what makes Hendrix head and shoulders above the rest, and here's what I came up with: his personality, and LSD.
One thing most rock guitar players have in common is an ego the size of Manhattan (some are larger when they're compensating for lack of technical skill). Hendrix had a huge ego no doubt, but it was balanced by a genuine humility and lack of self-consciousness. My specific example of this is when most players are playing and find a flash if inspiration, there is a brief moment of realization of what has just passed through them, a pause between the flow of inspiration and creating before allowing the next moment to occur (insert scrunchy face here). Imagine speaking, stopping to think about what you've said, then moving on to the next sentence.

There are lots of great guitarists and other artists who reach that space of pure inpiration, but no one has sustained that open channel for long periods of time as Jimi did. Interestingly enough, in the new documentary Festival Express, I saw Janis Joplin do it for long stretches, where there was no guile between her muse and the microphone.

But I digress... this rant is specifically about guitar players, and mostly rock guitar players. Jazz players are on the whole and by definition able to open themselves to extended moments of inspiration, but also tend to be too cerebral to let their "freak flag fly", so to speak. Rock guitar players almost have too much knowledge these days to let themselves go. As soon as the serendipitous muse strikes, their first instinct is to recreate that moment. That's the moment the muse moves on.

Why was Jimi able to avoid this? Most of all, I think it was his personality. When Jimi put down his guitar he was self-effacing and humble. He *never* called himself the "best", and generally like to point out many other great players when it was brought up. When Mr. Hendrix was creating at his best (the solo on "Machine Gun" as one example), there was no pause where he realized what had come through his fingers. The ideas flowed through him but weren't judged (like Parker and Coltrane) - that was up to the audience. And as the audience was processing was had just occurred he was already channeling his next sentence. Hendrix wasn't overly impressed with what had just passed through his speakers, but used it as a reference for his next statement, very much like a conversation. This is what most technically proficient guitar players never grok, and why very good players never seem to say much musically as they patch together impressive but meaningless strings of notes and riffs.

"What about the LSD you" you ask? Well, though Jimi's temperment was the most important factor, LSD, when used in the right amount and situation, very much stimulates creativity, cirumvents the ego, and most importantly to this diatribe, keeps you in the moment. What happened a second ago doesn't matter as much as what is happening now. Now, I'm not saying every guitar player or artist should drop acid, but as a musician there is no better lesson.

Anyway... this is all imho, and I didn't mean to turn this into a dissertation. It's just stuff I'm thinking about...

In the SVT-studio in Stockholm, technicians found a long lost tape with television recordings of the Jimi Hendrix Experience concert 1969. The network only broadcasted a few minutes back then and they assumed the rest of the tape had been destroyed or erased. 56 minutes of an authentic Jimi Hendrix concert in black & white will now perhaps be shown on TV. The network is looking into their options to broadcast this visual antiquity in the history of legendary musicians.
