A couple of months ago I got this email from a guy who'd recently moved up to Stockholm, from somewhere down south (of Sweden). He said he one morning was on his way to work when he saw this car with the bumbersticker "steelydangallary.se". He was totally blown off because Steely Dan was his favourites.

So, I answered his mail, told him about the outtakes over at Metzgers, the differences between the Blue and the Yellow guestbook, well, I "linked him up" to the Steely Dan Internet Community.

Haven't heard from him since.

Yes, a good song. It was something of a magical secret handshake thang when the bartenders in Take Five, (the old jazzlounge i used to frequent when a lot younger) played this song and the record... secret handshakes... so was the music of Steely Dan, Rickie Lee Jones, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, John Martyn, Bob Berg, Manhattan Transfer and a lot of others... even Thomas Dolby. And Tania Maria. Alphonse Mouzon... a lot of fusion back then. And legendary Eddie Harris (Eddy who?) who was a friend of the owners...
At the risk of sounding corny... but those were the days...

"...paint OFF the car" damn it!

Goin' back home
To the Village of the Sun
Out in back of Palmdale
Where the turkey farmers run, I done
Made up my mind
And I know I'm gonna go to Sun
Village, good God I hope the
Wind don't blow

It take the paint off your car
And wreck your windshield too,
I don't know how the people stand it,
But I guess they do
Cause they're all still there,
Even Johnny Franklin too
In the Village of the Sun
Village of the Sun
Village of the Sun, son
(Sun Village to you)

Has anyone heard that song, Zappa? It's a Hit.

It's on the live Roxy and Elsewhere album.

If you all were here I could sing it for you.

Comments:

Sun Mountain

This bright familiar sun
Rescues a dreary Sunday
On Sunday morning
Smoky Sunday
Like a Sunday in TJ
Drive west on Sunset
Powered by the sun
Watch the sun go brown
Colors from their sunny island
Where no sun is shining
Where the sailor shuts out the sunrise
In that sunny room she soothes me
Her skin, like milk, It's like she's never seen the sun
Wake up Darling, they're knocking, the Colonel's standing in the sun
They're speeding towards our sun on a party run

I'll rise when the sun goes down, cover every game in town
In the last light of the triple sun
Late line 'til the sun comes through the skylight

Now I step into the sun
Under the sun
That noon sun is blinding
Join in the search for sun and sand
I've got to have some time in the sun
To watch the sun rise in the dopest part

Then the sunshower breaks

I'm thinking of a major Jane Street sunrise
From the sunny day I met you
Our salad days.... beneath the autumn sun
Not too far from the earth or too close to the sun
A world become one
Of salads
and sun

My favorite Boondocks is when the younger kid, peering into the fridge, shouts, "there's NO SODA!!! we DON'T HAVE ANY SODA!!!!! All we got is JUICE".
Then his older brother pops into frame, saying, "Why not drink some water, it's like giving your insides a shower."

One of those serendipity moments. My brother emailed me this information last night and I thought I would put it out there for general consumption.

Back in June, when Nigey and I were first conversing privately, she mentioned that she had visited my workplace back in 1974, when Frank Zappa was taping this video (see link above). At that time in June, it was not available to purchase. Then a few weeks later I traveled to NY and while visiting, my brother mentioned the same Frank Zappa program and asked if I knew about it. I told him about my conversation with Nigey and that I hadn't known we ever had Frank on the lot, though other staff did remember him and shared their memories with Nigey and I. I find it incrediably funny that after spending a quarter century in the same location, I find out something, not once but twice in a 3 week period. Serendipity indeed.

--

Regarding Nigey's current Matt Groening article, I have on the back of my door here at work, a "Life in Hell" comic from last December. It shows the 2 "Fez" wearing characters doing their typical jumping and dancing totally naked (the reason I have it on the back side of my door) :-)
They are singing "Oh Come all ye Faithful" and at the end of the song, one of them sings "Scoobli-Dee, Scoobli-doo, Dee-Doodly-Dee-Doo-Diddly Dee-Wha!" and the other says, "Please don't tamper with the classics".
(I feel that they are channeling the Rajah of Erase and Frank Sinatra (on the Blue) in that comic and I couldn't resist putting it up along with my Steely Dan stuff). :-)

Other things that grace the back side of my door, Babylon Sisters done by Clas, Sherbourne Ange from Blaise, Sun Mountain list of Sun references in Steely Dan songs from the Yellow (posted, I believe by Gina), The LA Weekly Cover from last year with the picture of the car driving on Sunset Blvd and the audio coming out of the car is "Drive West On Sunset, To the Sea" and finally a Boondocks comic In panel one you have Michael Powell leaving the FCC saying "Hell Yeah, *#@% I'm Free, I'm Michael Powell, B#@#&, I'm Retired!" and in the 2nd panel, one little kid says to the other, "No I don't think that's what Michael Powell's doing right now."

to say 'good morning' would be an overstatement, somehow. If summer had been whirling in colorful extensions lately, today the grey skies hover with rain and a thick heavy layer of reality. So it seems. Within ten minutes the trial of Saddam Hussein in Bagdad can be followed live on tv and even internetbroadcasting via newspapers. A death penalty is to be expected, although some would rather keep him alive so he is to face a number of trials for his crimes and cruelty. Death seems to be no punishment.

If you checked in the Mizar5, you will have seen or read Nigey's With A Gun in which she, at my request, elaborates on her Los Angeles years and in particular her time spent at the L.A. Reader. Her experiences and observations so perfectly portray the ways of and in our society, and maybe in this case more precisely, American society. I read this WAG with a sense of horror and empathy and somehow it confirmed the idea of the early 80s to be a weird artificial even plastic era, leaving glossy marks and obscure signatures transforming into the 90s as if they hadn't existed.

What also strikes me about stories like these, is how important it is to stay level-headed about everything and how our human nature will always find ways, even in the tiniest nano-seconds, to marry off the absurd with the weird and intrinsic values of humor.

rhythm. the word itself has been a mystery ever since i first laid eyes on it. since this isn't our native language to begin with, every word gets the microscope treatment, right, at least, that's one way of approaching it. that's what i used to do.

"A wave surges towards the dock, hits, surmounts, squirts, tumbles, sweeps the other bridge. Scum carries, foams, brews, whirls between us all the garbage..."

Using verbal enumerations is a musical device here too. And it suggests this movement to the reader, the impression that you're litterally drowning in a violent shit storm.
Pardon my French.
The rhythm of the three dots, which is pretty much all he works with in the end, suggests a freight train by this feel of a frantic drive onward. One train with the driver on cocaine, and the reader taken along for the ride, yes. This feeling of an hurried exile, this need to run anywhere fast. With that, the style also expresses, mirrors, the perceived acceleration of modern life to its current pace. It anticipates the contemporary beat of culture, all zapped up, clipped ever faster futures without an afterthought.

There's no will to follow up on stories in the media nowadays. So one is lead from one drama to another at this schizoid pace. All things stop mattering as much with time, as the mind is so educated to consider and then forget issues on the fly, in this whirlwind of information. And consequently with time, educated through repeated exposure of this phenomenon, is left to feel as if nothing has any real weight anymore.
That everything is cheap and that life itself is of little consequence.

hm. but to stay in the mizar5 context, i made it 5 in here...

am soooo flabbergasted by this day when i went to get us some bread & sugar... always loved the clarinet, makes me think of the old american movies and the filmscores, the Benny Goodman days and such... am listening to the CD Lollo's wife Susanne gave to me, it's titled "Hondarribia" and it has 14 real wonderful and brilliant tunes on it... starting with "Just One Of those Things" from Cole Porter... work from Django Reinhardt ofcourse, and a brilliant rendition of Astor Piazolla's "Libertango", the song that once was DisGraced Jones :-)... compositions by Lollo Meier himself...
Really, these people can P L A Y. And the weirdest part is, i found a nice 2 CD compilation of Compay Segundo (Buena Vista Social Club) yesterday so we had Cuba around the house, in the midst of these October summerdays, when at the same time autumn leaves are falling, strange synergy of two seasons entwined... anyway, when we were listening to Segundo, Nino said it was about time to have some Django Reinhardt music on disc... so it was like this 'double serendipity' hit today :-)

Dear ß, thank you so much for your advice and support, I now feel a whole lot better after having experienced the boot. Due to my newly appointed task as a Sand Dweller in Fata Morgana, instead of being the Bad Breath Neutralizer (advanced) in Twitsville, I hadn't checked the forum for ages until just a day ago. I then uploaded the pre-final chapter of a story which ain't good nor bad, but certainly not proven to have been rubbing the wrong way in the past. Which kind of makes me realize, now, that these individuals who were cancelling out my membership perhaps don't like to be rubbed. At all!
-smirk-
And just a few hours ago, when I felt I could post my last post as in the final chapter to send that story up or down the tube, some CosmicStartledGoat had ended the thread and erased my latest entry, which kind of was a tasty prelude towards a happy ending! I don't know if you have ever heard jackasses laugh, but trust me, we laugh all the way up to Jupiter and Mars!
And no, thank you, Rumpus does have his pride, he may not be intelligent enough for a forum, he does know how to kick his way out of a place :-)

Angel, to wonder about civil manners in these internet boards is like stuffing a meatloaf in the oven, watching thru the glass and waiting for it to turn to its other side so it roasts real nice and crispy all over... And as far as mp3 players are concerned, I empathize with you. I once was tempted to get me one of those handy gadgets, but decided not to because it would only cause more alienation of this world's reality than I am suffering as we speak, eh, write. I will start this conversation here on the "civil board". Unfortunately, I am not sure how many have Ipods/MP3 type players.

Things I really love about my MP3.
It is light and portable (about the size of a Bic lighter). It holds a gig of memory (about 200 tunes). Pretty cool.

Things I absolutely HATE about my MP3 player.
It really ruins concept albums with that shuffle feature and I LOVE concept albums!
The audio levels are all over the board and I find myself having to constantly hit the volume control. What a pain in the neck!
I bet there are ways of dealing with these problems, but my instruction book basically tells you how to turn the thing on and off. Sigh....

Since every year at this time is James Dean year, I share this with you all. My little corner of Suburbia is the place where James Dean had his last meal and the local paper makes sure we know it. I won't mention that the view out my window at work has Griffith Observatory, where Rebel Without a Cause was shot. :-)

Newhall Signal (2002)
SEPTEMBER 30, 1955 —
In real life, he was one messed up cat-daddy. His behavior didn’t cross, but vaulted over being a “Rebel Without A Cause.” He was revered to American sainthood after this date, more famous in death than in life. James Dean, 24, American icon, died on this date. He had his last meal at the old Tip’s restaurant before his fatal crash in his racing Porsche in the neighboring San Joaquin Valley. His last meal? Apple pie and milk, according to the waitress who served him.

hey, i hears ya :-)
the role of the media, the media is a pit of snakes curling their tails without ends and still they rattle the cattle beyond oblivious, aarggh. just kidding in some way now, sorry. But Jesus, even beyond what they consider Christianity, he did have interesting things to say. And rumor has it that the role of Mary Magdalene in those days, right after he was crucified, was bigger than we assume. But because she was a woman, the other followers or disciples decided to ignore her testimonies. Anyway, this just in the light of gathering all info possible from historical perspectives... didn't find the time to dive into it yet :-)
Bin Laden is also just a Phantom of the Opera, perhaps the Soap Opera directed by well, you know who :-) I agree with that as well, what you say ß. But in some countries BL would be a martyr, seen as the symbol of well, we all know that as well... but maybe he's also just the wealthiest of his family and the other Laden folk would like to say 'good riddens', so they can collect whatever's to collect in earthly possessions and goods, money.

And what i like most, about what Jesus said.. to turn the other cheek? if so, someone else will slap you a tongue-in-cheek and i find that very funny.

Because, as Rumsfeld once put it, the media may be used as a weapon in the war on terror. The governement of the free world feels it has license to do this now, and likely does. Post-nine eleven, your brains are fair game, so they said. And so it appears prudent to exercise caution, be it minimally. And to remain on alert for anything suspicious.

what? you got both looks and brains here, how can you go wrong? That's the recipe.
In terms of style and functionality, this the best thing around. You know that. You don't need to be told.
You rock. Look, he said so.

I doubt everything all along, for sure. bin Laden may well have been all that was claimed but you only get to see the evil doctor nowadays on the good doctor's monthly podcasts. Video killed the bin laden anyway, likely from a lithium battery shortage "in the Pakistani border region".
I pronounce him dead. and you heard it here first. Your source for news. pfft

How many marines per year does it take to comb that area clean anyway? This has already become a joke.
You are fucking with me.

All this to opine that you gotta follow a strict cartesian method when it comes to the media. Not casting doubt on the truth of what they report per se, which is echoed all over (and thus one could argue is therefore "substantiated"), but more on the editorial motivations behind the choice of topics, what's deemed important to fret about and for how long. Take the Anthrax attacks of late 01, stunts that if properly performed could have killed millions of us guys. Well, forget it now. It's vapor. Case closed, no fear of a repeat... nothing, just wind, lots of wind now.

The slightest innuendo has people jumping, in line at the gas pumps or whatever. And that's the true power of the media, messing with people's heads. "Now it's okay to think this over and forget that", after a fashion.
And if you don't, you may end up sounding very stupid and/or really square.

aww, wtf, let it be me.

morning! Hi C... when cleaning up i found the cd of Great Danes & Poodles in China, still so LOVE the tune!
and you're right about BL becoming a martyr then, mankind seems to have a soft spot for the idea of idolizing, like last week James Dean was all over the news, tv and such... He was a fine actor in the few movies he made, but if it weren't for his accident, he'd never become such an icon... what's it with myth, right?
Jesus, now he really had interesting stuff to tell. Erase the catholic protestant anglican reformed whatever there is to hate about religion in general. If you strictly listen and think about his ideas, they do make sense. And are a challenge for our human nature, with all its tendencies to give in to the dark and disturbed :-)

Hi DS, infringement, eh? It's a thin line sometimes, but when others make money without giving credit or some of the benefits to the rightful owners, it's a different google game then.
The Blue picked up on the Be-Bop Daddys thread, nice to be diving in some SD trivia/history. It has a very nice ring to it, Be Bop Daddy. And i liked the shirt. Usually don't really focus on anything exterior such as how do they look and such, but DF really looked relaxed in this Detroit show, with the clothes and hairdo, very casual and 'loose', yes.
Howard Levy agreed to fill us in on how he met up with Donald Fagen, but i already explained to him i don't wanna know any details about the songs, like the titles or anything, nope, don't wanna know about that yet.
But so have to get back to the grind now, so off me goes...

It is safe to assume the Fagen recording was at the late stages as of August. It is suggested as well that the sessions now involve a hot producer, Rich Costey. And we have to assume that is because there is hit potential there, reason enough to justify the "investment".
Also, still tentatively speaking, there are at least two tracks on there that would feature harmonica, suggesting perhaps that a blues flavor has been retained for at least parts of the work.

And your mouth is watering there, some of youse anyway...

noooo time to 'play'. but met with two Americans last Tuesday, they were here for the second time. A daughter and her husband visiting the site where her dad crashed with his B-17 during WWII, November 1944. He survived. Those woods are nearby where i live, very near. This young tail gunner didn't want to talk about his war experiences, until his daughter and son-in-law convinced him to go in a room and record it on tape, with no-one in the room to listen... And so he did. He was 21 years young at the time it all happened, his daughter a baby-girl of 9 months. I read the transcript of the story, her father's voice and testimony was made into a radioplay and broadcasted. I even believe more victims of war were using the same method to tell their story in private, tape it so their children or anyone else can listen to it whenever he/she decides convenient. Her dad passed away in 2002. She didn't visit the crash site until 2004. Thanks to the internet, meeting someone from a village nearby who knew all about the WWII in this area.

I used this Anne Murray song as the opening track on a little 9/11-themed compilation I did a few years ago and which I listen to every year on this date. Unfortunately it's still just as relevant to the world in general as it was back in 1983. Just felt like posting the lyric today. Peace...

A Little Good News

I rolled out this morning, kids had the mornin' news show on
Bryant Gumbel was talkin' 'bout the fighting in Lebanon
Some senator was squawkin' 'bout the bad economy
It's gonna get worse you see, we need a change in policy

There's a local paper rolled up in a rubber band
One more sad story's one more than I can stand
Just once how I'd like to see the headline say
"Not much to print today, can't find nothin' bad to say"

Because...
Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single building down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

I'll come home this evenin', I'll bet that the news will be the same
Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane
How I wanna hear the anchorman talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care

Oh, tell me...
Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today
And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play
And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single building down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today...

Yep, tough job, eh? On another SAX note, a friend sent me a link to a great website from two web-artists based in South-Korea, Seoul. Young-Hae Chang and an American named Marc Voge. I like the way they use jazzmusic to support their text/stories that are displayed on your screen in just a singular type of font. I like this "minimal art" and the message it beholds. Also, the stories are often humorful and thought-provoking, like the Perfect Victoria one... Happens so, the other day i stopped to stare at a CNN World item about North Korea, their Asian correspondent Mike Chinoy had traveled into North Korea and was allowed to film... I've seen more documentaries on North-Korea (click link and then video right of the page and then smallband for an evaluation of the Dutch filmmaker Pieter Fleury with the Korean people he filmed. Most is in Korean, with Dutch subtitles, but what they comment on is that there's more to life & work (for women) than is showed in the documentary... and that their real life is way better than what the film shows...) before and find it a fascinating country, especially because of its background, system and (social) structures. I'm well aware of the problems, like poverty, hunger and such (we don't need to find this exceptional since what's going on in New Orleans pretty much teaches us there's a lot of hidden poverty around in a so called civil democratic and free world), still, the more i learn about countries like North-Korea (and notice the GOOD things), the more i question our so called western sense of democracy, and that of the USA in particular. Hasn't it by now, turned into something beyond "the people's voice" as in something not so just, and not so right... Got nothing to do with freedom of any kind, does it... And besides freedom, which is often merely just a hollow phrase, maybe it's the idea of an ideology attracting rather than the outcome of reality we live in on a daily basis? This world wasn't as complex and polluted when i was clueless in my happy toddler crawling days, was it? I'm curious about North-Korea as a nation, a nation of people who have their own way of life. THAT i am curious about. They also prefer to be called the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea...

Anyway, in that Perfect Victoria "performance", you get similar pondering about North-Korea, seeing from a neighbour's point of view... wondering about the simplicity of life once having viewed smiling young girls playing their accordeons or guitars... It's simple and yet, there's nothing simple about it if you think about the amount of work put in to get everyone in synchronization... And strictly seen from visual perspectives, the beauty of such a demonstration... Like in the former USSR... I dunno, how come i see the beauty in all of that and feel fatigued about our western society? These days democracy is nothing but a broken tool of capitalism and i seriously have to consider returning to my adolescent roots and euphoria when learning about anarchism during history class :-)
And in Mike Chinoy's North Korean Journey, the camera was recording a group of people/women buying and eating ice-cream. The interpreter tried to stop the camera from rolling... He explained that a) they hadn't been asked for their permission to film them and b) they don't like to be filmed when eating. Common courtesy in my book, right... even respecting another individual's right on privacy and yet again that sense of "freedom" we used to rant on about...
Ah well... therefore, it was interesting to see the "conflict" in a moment...

Here's an excerpt from a book on Hawaii, by Leonard Lueras (1984)... It's mostly images of Hawaii and some narration, but i wanted to show you this, since Mark Twain's totally up Nigey's alley:

"No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me, but that one; no other land could so longlingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same. For me its balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of the surfbeat in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floathing above the cloud rack; I can feel the spirit of its woodland solitudes, I can hear the plash of its brooks; in my nostril still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago..."
~Mark Twain, reminiscing in 1889 about his first and only visit to Hawaii

morning! some musical news again... we're off down south next week(end) since we like to roam the Namur-Dinant area, been there before, along the river Meuse, beautiful scenery and -small- villages with names such as Annevoie-Rouillon, Anhée, Houffalize, Bouillon, Florennes, Philippeville... Medieval castles, woods, water, good food and peace & quiet, even with tourists strollin' about.
We're gonna stay in a Louis XIV style mansion/castle in a small village named Rosée which is not far from the small town Dinant. And this is where 'taking for granted' steps in, because one great inventor was born there and he created an instrument we learned to love, dislike or even hate: the saxophone.
Adolphe Sax (1814-1894). Although we're on a brief escape from the grind and so on, i don't think i can ignore this fact for Mizar5 and will have to write some about it, right? And take some pictures....

That's OK, Nigey. I probably should have mentioned the "last year" part just a little bit sooner in the post to make it clearer.

For my own curiosity just to see if there was anything still available about the 2004 NJ storm online anywhere I just Googled on "thousand year storm" & "nj" and came up with these Red Cross links about the flooding if anyone cares to take a look...

Red Cross article
Red Cross photos

As I said before, I only mention it by way of saying that until you've seen some such damage first hand, it's hard to comprehend the forces involved or the speed with which events unfold. In our local case, once one dam failed all that water goes rushing out and down to the next dam in line, etc. The storm and the resultant flooding was indeed BIG national news at the time. I seem to recall that Peter Jennings even anchored the ABC World News Tonight from one of the flooded areas about 5 miles from my house one night. And yet that storm was small potatoes compared to Katrina! So it's still hard for me to really comprehend some of the pictures I'm seeing coming out of N.O. Of course, it doesn't really matter the scale of the disaster, if you lose your home and all possessions (as many did) it's a tragedy nonetheless.

Anyway, among my main points was simply that the Red Cross and The Salvation Army were heavily involved in the relief efforts then and seem to be very reliable and caring organizations. Probably no organization is perfect, but they generally do good work where it's needed.

Either way, about the New Jersey storm, whether last or this year, it's the thought and message that counts, -N :-) Very often only nature can make mankind feel 'humble' again and to see a certain twit for a prez handle the situation as badly as he did in his official announcement(s), well, no wonder NYB's screaming bloody murder again in Yellow, complaining about foreign countries not coming to help the USA... Makes you really wonder about the news sources some people make use of, right? Ah well, also hated the fact it were mostly colored citizens in the footage, colored people around the New Orleans prison trying to keep their heads (literally) above water and colored people raiding the shops and stores to try and get some food, clothes and essentials to survive on. You can guess what that looks like... people jumping to all kinds of conclusions... how come they didn't get away in time etc etc...
So a lot of work is cut out for your nation again, i hope it won't divide but bring together instead :-)

Ha, yes, well, been absent as absent can be, 42 imaginary candles were lit to celebrate some, count the blessings and whisper hope for everyone out there less fortunate than we are... this one of those days you remember, when a child and learning about the world, wondering how come not everyone out there has a house, clothes and food or why children and people starve to death... how one can find a balance in not being (called) selfish when pursuing one's own happiness instead of feeling blue or sad about the ways in the world... besides Mother Nature there's also human nature in its full features, both positive and negative.

As prelude, I just want to say that I do not mean to imply that the following is in any way comparable to Katrina's wrath in Louisiana/Mississippi or the Asian tsunami aftermath. It ain't even close (or even close to close). However, my only intent is to illustrate what is now my own personal point of reference when it comes to truly understanding the force of floodwaters.

The pictures which follow are the result of a hard rain and many small dams bursting to let forth the contents of relatively small ponds and lakes. The pictures and stories coming out of the southland right now are at least 1000x worse in severity and scale...
_______________

On July 12, 2004, we had a freak storm in my part of NJ. It was not a hurricane (no high winds) or anything like that, but simply a very hard concentrated rain. Most storms run their course as they pass overhead in a natural flow. For some reason, though, this one just absolutely stalled in one spot and kept dumping more and more rain---13" in less than 12 hours.

The local papers took to calling it the "thousand-year storm" (Ed. note: links in this post added later) because they said statistically the conditions which led to this only occur about that often around these parts. The rain (and some flooding) was predicted, but no one really had any clue of exactly how it would unfold.

The rain itself still would not have been that much of a problem if it wasn't for the fact that many lakes and ponds in the area had old dams that were not well maintained. Some were/are privately owned, others state owned. Some were not even known to actually exist---until they failed. All that water had to go somewhere and certain nearby towns suffered serious flooding. Some dams remain unfixed and their associated lakebeds dry still today. The good news is that despite concentrated property damage, there were no fatalities.

In the days following the storm, I was driving by this house and noticed the vehicle "parked" in the back. I took this shot from the edge of the road. There's a creek to the right of the house. I assumed that the van belonged to someone at the house, but found out later in local news articles that it belonged to someone who'd been driving by when the surging water hit. The person ended up spending time on the roof of the garage, eventually being rescued by boat...

A van washed off the road

A close-up...

A close-up

I scanned this shot from my local rinky-dink paper because it shows the same vehicle actually in the flood waters at the time...

Same vehicle during the flood

Here are two different angles showing where one of the better maintained dams used to be. This was a dam between two lakes which had a paved road across it...

Dam & road gone

Road & dam gone

These next two shots were among some I pulled from the coverage at the time on the Philly Inquirer website.

Note the working traffic light. This was main street of one of the three most affected towns...

Alternate transportation down main street

This canoe is still there wrapped around the tree...

Canoe wrapped around tree

The Red Cross does great work, even in "small" disasters. There were three or four FEMA disaster relief centers set up, at least one for each of the most affected towns. This truck's crew was, I assume, making rounds to assess what sort of help folks might need...

Red Cross truck

Finally, just down the road from my house, there's another road which had chunks washed out when a nearby pond overran it's banks and the tiny wood dam/spillway that had been in place for years and years. It's not a clear shot of him, but here's my Dad checking out the road damage where the floodwaters flowed. It's normally just a tiny creek...

Minor road damage

Oh, and btw, the Daddy G. household was never in any danger as we don't live too near any creeks, ponds, or lakes. Sure, the back yard itself looked like a lake at the time and there was more basement seepage than usual (some seepage is "normal" during extended periods of steady rain), but nothing that caused any real damage.

Anyway, like I said, this just gives folks an idea of my own personal measuring stick when it comes to floods. Until last year I really had no comprehension of such things despite seeing occasional news coverage of such.

Hi Ange... thanks for that, sounds great. Footage never shown before, 1961-1966... We watched Taxi Driver yesterday, The Making Of was a wonderful documentary included, not the usual "actors singing unbelievable praise about actors and director etc" that bothers me on most DVD's... De Niro, Scorsese, Harvey Keitel, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster and others shared some of their memories about making the movie and talked about the perspective, given the time it was filmed, in the 70's.
Great movie, great cinema. Wonderful score by Bernard Hermann, who died right after having finished recording the score...
And something Jodie said, about movies made in the 70s, she's right. There's something about that era in time that's special.
Gotto go, laters.

Hey there LP...who knows we might swing by Maine after all next year...

Today's Glenn's funeral and it took me until last Saturday to get things settled in somehow... to find peace with it... very weird because I never actually knew him that well, but when one does have a sense of somebody's personality and is a witness to his craft and talent, even when watching or following from a distance can bring sadness and a sense of loss. Nigey said something wise, about music always bringing solace in times like these... It was saturday morning, very early, a restless mood reigned. So Nino and I kind of went on a little 'shopping spree', the movies and music department of some huge mediastore is like a candyshop, it's still overwhelming to realize this is the current way of life nowadays... We had Scorcese's Taxi Driver on our list, a Classic edition with some postcards and a framed piece of celluloid, a genuine collector's box. I was just pacing the isles where they had stacks of cheap cd's and kind of just glanced at them, in the meantime they had Paul McCartney playing, ebony and ivory and all his greatest and not so great hits... i found myself humming along which kind of helped regain consciousness in that huge building of modern consumerism, a place i don't feel comfortable in when entering... and then i saw it, Judy Garland on a cover and the magical words: American Songbook. My hand just reached for it and a quick scan of the back made me cherish this find in an instant... this is so unbelievable in a way, a 5CD box with 70 songs from the American Songbook, all the classics such as Billie Holiday's Lover Man, Doris Day's Sentimental Journey, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennett, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzerald, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Anita O'Day etc etc... for only €4,99 (about the same in dollars).

At home and spinning those 5 discs, I can only say they're GRAND and the sound is even better, some songs make you believe the singer is actually standing in your living-room... Whoever compiled this box (Cheapolata productions, worth a grin), did a very fine job in seeking some fine renditions, with the best of orchestration as well. Some recordings are live, most are done with big bands and the arrangements and musicality are priceless. So, quite a find and treasure in that modern non-sophisticated buy-it-all media dome. Listening to those 70 songs brought solace for sure and a renewed sense of how to turn something bad into something good.

Music. Music always brings solace. Yes indeed!

hey Ange... he was a friend and colleague of friends, i never really knew him personally, only saw him perform and around in the social places when he was still in town...we talked maybe once or twice, and via his girlfriend i collected a lot of their books and such when they were moving away to the national music heart of this country, yes, the bookstand/fleemarket days :-)
It has always been obvious he was a major talent and would fit right in our national mecca of entertainment and television. Happens so, i talked about this with the drummer from his jazz trio, Geert Roelofs, not so long ago on that wedding party. About music, jazz, fame and the choices one makes as a musician. Everybody into music knew Glenn or had performed with him and he had definitely chosen a path of his own the last years, one of success.
Therefore it's most sad, because he was an inspiration to many, a musician's musician too. Also an example of how to do well in this rather small country, being a musician or an artist. Ah well, I shouldn't dwell too long on these matters. It's devastating for his family and friends in the first place.
Today also happens to be the birthday of my brother, he would have turned 41 if he would still have been around. One of the first times I saw Glenn, he reminded me of my brother, the way they sat behind the piano was somewhat similar... (Also, these are natural things occurring, when having lost someone, right...the process of dealing with it, catharsis) I was working in a media cafe then and Glenn had just graduated with honors and was performing around town...Like my brother was a conservatory student too... So that triggers memories and thoughts...Sometimes one has these notions about people, something in their way, their vibe is reminiscent...I don't have that with every music student or pianist btw :-)

Here's a flower from the garden, they surprised me, i thought they would only last one year, but somehow they're around again :-)
And so the cycle of life continues...

"How about a hot dog for lunch? A HOT DOG PROGRAM is an All-American celebration of those fabulous and phenomenally popular little sausages in their soft little buns. From a Fourth of July hot-dog eating contest at Coney Island to a gourmet reindeer-dog vendor at the start of the Iditarod dog-sled race, we visit some of the country's coolest hot dog places. A very fine and brilliant young Dutch musician/pianist got killed in a car accident last night, Glenn Corneille, only 35 years young... He is from my region here, lived in Maastricht for years and many musicians or friends here know him, or worked with him... you'd see him move from jazz to the television and semi-celeb status, into more 'popular' stuff, still, his jazzprojects never ceased to exist, like with drummer Geert Roelofs and bassist Werner Lauscher... I sent their first CD, the Corneille/Roelofs Trio to Chicago based pianist John Erickson, who has a great version of "Third World Man' on his "And So On" album... It's the same breed of pianists.. they're pure and lyrical... Quite a while ago now my Dad and I saw A Hot Dog Program (from Pittsburgh's WQED on PBS!) about hot dog eateries across the U.S. We like a good dog now and then and it was quite an interesting show. Amazing to see the regional variations on the traditional dog, not to mention some of the characters that sell or eat'em. I don't know if they'll be airing it again anytime soon, but I see it's available on DVD for $19.95 through shoppbs.org.

We later saw Sandwiches That You Will Like (again from WQED/PBS) which is also listed on the same shoppbs.org page (for $22.95) with the Hot Dog Program. The sandwich show was good too, but for some reason we seemed to like the hot dog one a little better.

http://www.wienerschnitzel.com/ In case you can't see what my "Hotdog Dude" was selling, here is their website. When I got to my car, there had to be at least 10 free hot dogs and ice cream coupons under my windshield wiper. Hey, thanks Hotdog Dude. :-)

A guy took his girlfriend to her first football game. They had
great seats right behind their team's bench. After the
game, he asked her how she liked the experience. "Oh,
I really liked it," she replied, "especially the tight
pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn't
understand why they were killing each other over 25
cents." Dumbfounded, her date asked, "What do you
mean?" "Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and
then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming
was: 'Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!' I'm
like..Helloooooo? It's only 25 cents!!!!

Howdy friends, folks, and fellow fiends --
Some of you may remember (fondly or otherwise) the radio program John Tabacco and I co-hosted on WUSB prior to John's departure for Maui last August. After a year's hiatus, it has returned to the airwaves and is also available for listening on WUSB's website. Here are the details:

WHAT: The Non-Objective Reality Show
WHEN: Thursdays, 10 A.M. - Noon (U.S. Eastern Time)
WHERE: WUSB, Stony Brook, New York
90.1 FM
Netcast at http://www.wusb.fm
The show is broadcast/netcast in "real" time, then is archived for one week (until the next show) on the WUSB website. To listen to the archived version, go to the WUSB home page, then click on the program grid. Go to the programming for Thursday, find The Non-Objective Reality Show, then click on the ear symbols to the right of the grid to listen. The top ear gives you the first hour of the show, the second ear is the second hour. (I didn't know that until John pointed it out to me!)

Our guest this week is Eric Nichols, who'll be joining us by phone from North Pole, Alaska to discuss his new book "Plasma Dreams", current research into the ionosphere, Alaskan folkways, vacuum tubes, mini-carrot ranching, and/or the aurora borealis. It's sure to be a lively conversation!

If you'd like to contact us about the radio show, or have any recording studio-related questions, e-mail us here:
presidentstreetstudios(AT)yahoo(DOT)com

You can always find sorta new news and semi-frequent updates at
http://www.nigeylennon.com

P.S. If you'd prefer not to hear anything further about this @#$%& radio program, just say the word and we'll promptly remove your name from the announcement list.
(edit DWB: or scroll on by)

Thanks for listening!

Thanks so much, Gina.

I think that no matter what, if you come our way, you will probably be drawn over to the coast. It is our best feature. :-)
