Gina Saturday, May 14th 2005 - 08:17:10 PM B, if you check this place... i had to interview a Dutch soccerplayer who once was in the MVV team... he's an international, plays for the Dutch national team, Champions League etc etc with AZ... He spent his youth with Ajax and left the club when he was 19 to play in Maastricht... he stayed here for 3 years. then 4 and a half at Willem II, that's where he was chosen to play for the national team... I asked him if he could send me a picture from his Ajax years, or wearing the Oranje shirt... and a signature ofcourse... anyway, there's talk of him either going back to Ajax or abroad, to Real Madrid... He's 29, in his prime years and a very nice guy... Don't know when, but you can expect something in the snailmail :-)

angel Friday, May 6th 2005 - 08:01:29 PM I saw many praying mantis' while growing up in NY. But I had never seen one in LA until maybe 2 or so years ago. I think maybe as we add plants and trees to this desert area, they come. I remember feeling comforted with its presence. Sort of like a good omen. :-) Something I don't miss at all are cicadas. We have nice, quiet evenings here in LA....well, minus the car shootings, of course.

Nigey Friday, May 6th 2005 - 02:57:56 PM My better half, who taught biology both in high school and college, has always used the term "mantiD". The scientific name for the Chinese mantid, by the way, is Tenodera aridifolia...glad you asked? :)

Daddy G. Friday, May 6th 2005 - 04:55:55 AM "New" front page pic at DF.com, an old B&W melodica shot. Seems to be the only site change right now. No big deal, but just thought I'd mention it.

Daddy G. Thursday, May 5th 2005 - 08:44:01 PM Yeah, in my Googling for background info I too learned of the term 'mantid' and initially thought it was some web steward's typo, but quickly realized it was too widespread to be a mistake. Apparently it's acceptable either way, but like many I always heard the 's' version, so that's generally what I use myself. By the way, I don't know if anyone noticed it, but (in case you didn't) the two mantis/d pics are clickable. The first one just leads to educational info about the insects, but of course no one really wants that---certainly not me! The second pic link is more fun and in the spirit of the "Parody Corner." It may be an online oldie now, but it seemed like an appropriate musical "goodie" to link to even though it's rather UN-Steely. :-)
|
.....
|
Gina Thursday, May 5th 2005 - 08:03:53 PM It wasn't until Nigey called them "mantid" i learned that it was the actual word for it, i figured she perhaps mistyped, since the s and d are neighbours on the keyboard? but when i googled the word, wham, a whole new wor(l)d dawned on me (grin). I loved the Don Ellis pics too, the way these insects strike a pose, it's as if they're always on their 'qui vive' or something... and that part indeed about them being able to twist their tiny little heads with those huge eyes, mmm, one has to wonder about what they're capable of, right?

angel Thursday, May 5th 2005 - 07:15:58 PM Even more interesting is the fact that they are Chinese! After yesterday on the Yellow, that is really quite funny. I remember my Dad telling us never to kill one of them, so in that spirit, I never do. They are special.

|
Daddy G. Thursday, May 5th 2005 - 07:08:01 PM Gina, some very good mantid pics there too! Thanks. Yes, very sci-fi-ish. I know when I was poking around doing some background on my post, I came across a lot of good pages with info and pics, but those are some of the best pics on that page you found. These creatures definitely sound like Steely characters: "Females will often kill the male after, or even during, mating. A female may turn around and bite the male's head off, finishing him when mating is over." :-) And I can't help but think of "...Chinese mantids in the banyan trees..." Sorry 'bout that. :-)

Daddy G. Thursday, May 5th 2005 - 06:26:11 PM Nigey, Angel -- Thanks, I appreciate the compliments. Honestly I didn't have much clue what I was doing at the time. Those shots prove the old saying about a blind squirrel. I just got lucky, especially since it was "dinner time." Most pics I take are rather pedestrian, but I always liked those mantis pics myself if only for the "Katy Lied" cover similarity with the bug theme, so that's why I thought they might be of some slight interest.

Daddy G. Thursday, April 28th 2005 - 01:36:47 AM Thanks Angel! I appreciate the info and your effort in checking! After it came up here I went back to TitanTV again where I have all my local TV channels configured and did a search on "opry" in all show descriptions. Figured that oughtta cover it, but nothing came up (TitanTV covers 2 weeks). I'll just have to keep trying to look for it every once in a while. The March 30th air date definitely sounds right for the time frame of when I saw it. Oddly enough (if I recall correctly and I'm pretty sure) it WASN'T on during a pledge drive then, so I don't know if pledge time makes a diff or not. But I'll keep the ol' eyeballs peeled in case it pops up again. Thanks again!

angel Wednesday, April 27th 2005 - 11:54:39 PM Daddy G: I emailed my contact at WHYY. He says that they last aired it on March 30th and that they have no current plans to rerun. Check back in June or August (traditional pledge periods), is my best guess. I knew you were from Jersey, but did not see NJN (WNJS?) on the contract. I didn't think of trying Philly. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Daddy G. Wednesday, April 27th 2005 - 02:01:44 AM Just thought I'd add that the other two PBS channels I get are WYBE (also out of Philly, a much lower budget, less "mainstream" PBS) and WNJS, aka NJN. I don't get WNET at all.
|
.....
|
Daddy G. Wednesday, April 27th 2005 - 01:37:56 AM Well, I get 3 PBS channels, but I saw the show on the main one out of Philly, WHYY. What you describe sounds like the show, but I can't tell for sure. I only found out about it at the time maybe 5 minutes before it came on and so I just watched it without taping it. PBS tends to rerun certain shows a lot, though, and so I figured I'd catch it again soon. But when I checked TitanTV online to see if it was scheduled anytime in the two weeks right after that it wasn't. Haven't checked lately, but I wasn't sure what the exact title was, only that it was an hour-long show. But at least I enjoyed it at the time. Willie Nelson sure looked different back then! :-)

angel (the public one) Wednesday, April 27th 2005 - 12:47:10 AM Someone say PBS? THE GRAND OLE OPRYS VINTAGE CLASSICS is a collection of taped performances from the Grand Ole Opry television series broadcast in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Featuring the biggest stars and most beloved songs of each era, the special will most likely include such musical icons as Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, Tammy Wynette and many others. Featured songs include Crazy, Oh Lonesome Me, Flowers on the Wall, Ring of Fire, El Paso and Stand By Your Man. Daddy G: What station are you watching this show on, WNET?

Daddy G. Tuesday, April 26th 2005 - 07:27:24 PM Yes, Gina, I would have enjoyed it. I always liked "Ode to Billie Jo" (or however the title name is spelled), but I don't have it in my CD collection. Once in a great while my local PBS tv station might air a country show. A few weeks ago they ran a "country legends" one hour special that was quite good. It featured Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, and a whole slew of the old-timers in archived video clips (often B&W) performing on the Grand Ole Opry. I haven't seen it aired since, though.

That is, of course, whenever the eccentric musicians werent too busy with one of their epic Scrabble matches. Hm, never figured a link between 10CC and Steely Dan either. BUT when i heard John Tabacco's music, it had me think of Godley & Creme stuff, something to do with the clarity in the voice and the imagination they use in their music. it was very interesting in a way when 10CC split up, to notice the difference ... Dreadlock Holiday on one side and that Godley & Creme Faces song i believe, a videoclip that had faces change ...? and one song in particular i liked, 'strange apparatus, you've never seen' .. is something from the lyrics i remember ... 'have a nice day' .... okay. now i need to find out what it was :-)

Lars Sunday, March 13th 2005 - 06:01:37 PM He ain´t heavy but ... Eric Stewart once played in 10 cc - . A shamelessley underrated group who made one of the best albums of the 70ies - The Original Soundtrack and then no more of interest. I visited his site last night and found a link to SteelyDan.com. More, he credits Donald Fagin(sic)for the Rhodes sound on "I'm not in love": "The Fender Rhodes sound I used on "I'm Not In Love" was achieved with the simple MXR Orange Phaser, the first one they released. I bought it in New York at Manny's guitar shop after the assistant told me he had sold some to Donald Fagin." Never thought of linking 10 cc and SD. Serendipity or whateva?

last word on famous last words Sunday, March 6th 2005 - 01:22:17 PM http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,1429164,00.html "The significance of the writer's last word was unclear yesterday. It could have been the beginning of a letter addressed to a lawyer (one of the American uses of the word COUNSELLOR, along with therapist or adviser), he may have been describing himself, or he might simply have wished to confound those looking for neat explanations for his suicide - an echo of Rosebud, the central character's last word in the film Citizen Kane.

Gina Saturday, February 19th 2005 - 10:02:42 AM Hey you! Speak of Hornsby, the Irish band Solas have an album which is produced by Neil Dorfsman who according to the info on their website worked with Hornsby as well. Even if you think musical styles are wide apart, there's always something to connect and connect and connect and weave patterns of a whole, as a circle.

Kitty Tuesday, January 25th 2005 - 04:35:57 PM and where can we do the can-can jack? still, one question though, regarding the subject of 'self' and 'being'. do you think it relates to the environment always, a sense of 'self' and 'being'? don't you think an individual can rule out other people, other things BUT what lives inside the head or mind? what about when in a forest, all alone, nothing but trees and silence to surround the lone human factor of existence .. don't you think one can get as close to 'self' as 'being' can possibly be?

baby what he said: Monday, January 24th 2005 - 04:07:19 PM "The propensity to invest the self with a certain value, and to demand recognition for that value, is what in today's popular language we would call "self-esteem." The propensity to feel self-esteem arises out of the part of the soul called emos. It is like an innate human sense of justice. People believe that they have a certain worth, and when other people treat them as though they are worth less than that, they experience the emotion of anger. Conversely, when people fail to live up to their own sense of worth, they feel shame, and when they are evaluated correctly in proportion to their worth, they feel pride. The desire for recognition, and the accompanying emotions of anger, shame, and pride, are parts of the human personality critical to political life. According to Hegel, they are what drives the whole historical process."

time capsule Monday, January 17th 2005 - 01:00:50 PM "Dasein exists as a being that, in its being, is concerned about that being itself. Essentially ahead of itself, it has projected itself upon its potentiality-of-being before going on to any mere consideration of itself. In its project it is revealed as something thrown. Thrown and abandoned to the world, it falls prey to it in taking care of it. as care, that is, as existing in the unity of the entangled, thrown project, this being is disclosed as a There. Being-together-with others, it keeps itself in an average interpretedness that is articulated in discourse and expressed in language. Being-in-the-world has always already expressed itself, and as being-together-with beings encountered within the world, it constantly expresses itself in addressing and talking over what is taken care of. The circumspect taking care of common sense is grounded in temporality, in the mode of making present that awaits and retains. As taking care in calculating, planning, preparing ahead, and preventing, it always already says, whether audibly or not: then that will happen, before that will get settled, now that will be made up for, that on that former occasion failed or eluded us."(1927)
