Good morning. Hey C, thanks for reminding, this format can hold 150 entries and we're already close to that, so time to save it in The Lounge :-)

I also recall Nigey Lennon once mentioning something about halcyon, gotto go back in time to find that...

"Halcyon and On"? That was clever.

Why not name my album "Halcion and Gone"?

Hell, I have to copyright that one too.

During the night I also found out that Halcyon is a special kind of Kingfishers, they live around Australia.

So much to learn, so little time.

Gina! Save all writings here at the Café Déscargot, especially my notes, I may need them some day.

Finally found the solution to the Halcyon/Halcion mysteri:

Read, it's interesting:

The Halcion® Years

Halcyon is a 2000 year old greek word meaning "calm", "happy" "no worries".

Halcion is an old bensodiazepine, a sleeping pill, developed by Pfizer. Pfizer switched the Y to an I and they got them self a hit!

My next album's gonna be named Halcion Nights.

http://www.buav.org/covance

The link above is not for the faint-hearted. For work i went to see two young vegetarian sisters (21 and 18 years) this day. They had just returned from Pamplona in Spain, where they had participated in the Human Race, the Running of the Nudes in order to protest against the bullfights and needless torture of animals. And yesterday they went to Munster in Germany, to protest against Covance and the company's brutal abuse of animals, the link above shows it all. Its headquarters is in Princeton, New Jersey.

Excerpt from the BUAV* website:

Simply because we have the ability to use and abuse animals, doesn't mean we have the right to do so. One argument often used by pro-vivisectionists to justify animal experiments is that humans are 'superior' to other animals. Just like other forms of prejudice such as racism, this speciesist argument implies that because we consider ourselves to be superior, the rights, suffering or death of those we consider to be inferior (in this case other sentient creatures) is somehow less significant or valid than our own. The BUAV believes that this is a very selfish approach to life. As human beings we have the unique ability to understand that other animals suffer unnecessarily as a result of our actions, and to change our behaviour accordingly so as to avoid the suffering of others. As an individual you have a choice to strive for the type of society you really want. Do you want a truly compassionate society that accepts its moral responsibility to look after other animals and avoid causing them deliberate suffering? Or do you want a selfish society where the oppression of those who cannot speak for themselves is deemed acceptable and where mankind's self-appointed superiority justifies animal cruelty?

Hey there folks, just wanted to spread the word...

MTV, VH1 To Air Live 8 Performances Uninterrupted

Ten hours will be broadcast commercial-free on Saturday.

Responding to viewers and critics, MTV Networks has announced that it will broadcast 10 hours of Live 8 performance footage — including sets from Jay-Z, U2, Paul McCartney and others — commercial-free on MTV and VH1.

MTV and VH1 will each offer five hours of uninterrupted performance footage with differing artist lineups on Saturday. VH1 will air its Live 8 highlights from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, while MTV's batch of highlights will roll out from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"At MTV and VH1, we're in a constant and candid dialogue with our audience, and in the wake of the live events last Saturday, our viewers have resoundingly told us online they want to see full-set performances from their favorite artists," MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said of the move. "As a result of viewer demand and thanks to the Live 8 organizers and performers, MTV and VH1 will air 10 consecutive hours from one of the most important musical events of our time."

MTV has also announced plans to roll out a half-hour special on the issues behind the Live 8 event on Friday at 9 p.m. ET. "Live 8: Next Steps" will re-air at 8 p.m. on Saturday immediately following the Live 8 highlights.

Hi Daddy G... Violence on these terms has nothing to do with religion or politics. They're just fanatics, nothing else. Here's something Herb Sierra from CNN sent, it was printed in the London Times:

A Letter To The Terrorists, From London

What the fuck do you think you're doing? This is London. We've dealt with your sort before. You don't try and pull this on us. Do you have any idea how many times our city has been attacked? WHatever you're trying to do, it's not going to work. All you've done is end some of our lives, and ruin some more. How is that going to help you? You don't get rewarded for this kind of crap. And if, as your MO indicates, you're an al-Qaeda group, then you're out of your tiny minds. Because if this is a message to Tony Blair, we've got news for you. We don't much like our government ourselves, or what they do in our name. But, listen very clearly. We'll deal with that ourselves. We're London, and we've got our own way of doing things, and it doesn't involve tossing bombs around where innocent people are going about their lives. And that's because we're better than you. Everyone is better than you. Our city works. We rather like it. And we're going to go about our lives. We're going to take care of the lives you ruined. And then we're going to work. And we're going down to the pub. So you can pack up your bombs, put them in your arseholes, and get the fuck out of our city.

Here's another picture from Bospop:

Been running errands all day and have not been able to follow much news coverage of the London bombings, but I just wanted to add that of course my thoughts and prayers are with the British people this evening.

As usual the worst events bring out the best in people. Perhaps one day we'll figure out a way to allow the "best" to show up first as a matter of course and not just on the heels of the "worst" in the first place. (If that makes any sense.)

I'm saddened and horrified. I want no part of anybody's belief system (political, religious, or whatever) which would allow such actions to be interpreted as "right" or "justified" in any way.

In the Netherlands a very outstanding broadcast network for 10 years, the NPS, is bound to disappear because the government decided to exclude them from their new plans for the public broadcasting system. The NPS is one of the few networks left to produce interesting television and radio. They offer great and insightful documentaries as well as quality news shows and music such as presented by NPS Output. That's sad. Dutch television sure deteriorated as if in light years, that's why we're "compelled" to watch the BBC, German networks and the Belgian VRT/Canvas. Canvas showed a BBC music documentary yesterday, "Walk On By" (2001) a series about the history of the popular song, directed by Alan Lewens who also directed the Classic Albums series, Steely Dan's Aja. Yesterday's episode was called "After the Goldrush" and showed very nice footage of a young Joni Mitchell, the Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Eagles, Bill Withers...

Then this afternoon when leaving the house to go to a holiday cookout I wanted to shut one of the front bowed windows, but had to go outside to shoo a mantid (about a 2" one) off the window ledge so it wouldn't get crushed. It was already handicapped, having only one forelimb! Poor guy! I wonder if those things grow back....

"Ah come on Daddy G, United States are today what the Roman Empire was back then. And one day it has to break down. It's the nature of the game.

And meanwhile it is fun to poke fun over you gringos. Don't take it personal."

Well, I normally don't take it personally and will just let such comments slide, but today just seemed like the right day to speak my mind for once about such things even though I'm not normally a flag-waver by any means. The original comment's tone about Americans in general just seemed ill-timed and specifically designed for no other reason than to provoke a reaction on this day. Which is probably even more reason why I should have held my "tongue" in check, but I just couldn't let it pass.

"All in fun" is fine. I'm down with "all in fun" most times. But sometimes if something "all in fun" is repeated enough it ceases to be "fun" and is just mean-spirited and/or disrespectful. Especially when coming from an anonymous poster. I know it wasn't you Clas, so I do appreciate your "explanation" post even if you do use the disparaging "gringo" term which I don't particularly care for, but I won't hold it against you since I now know it's "all in fun." :-)

As for "...one day it has to break down. It's the nature of the game," well, that may be true, but it doesn't mean that anyone should necessarily root gleefully for that outcome ASAP as it seems as if some folks do.

I just think that there's middle ground somewhere between the "America sucks, death to the imperialist pigs" people and the "What's good for America is good for the world" people.

Oh well. I'll get over it. In fact I pretty much have already (believe it or not) and even if I don't, well, A) there's no particular reason why anyone around here should worry about my feelings anyway (I can take such posts most days), and B) I'm not gonna drag out the issue into some long pointless non-Steely debate. Everyone can feel however they feel about America and Americans or even me in particular for that matter. But just this once I had to speak up and say my piece. Having done that, I'll shut up on the topic now.

I'd much prefer such things stayed in the Yellow anyway where we traditionally see such crossfire. :-)

Peace.

Clas, it's surprise after surprise these days... never imagined you to be "Runnin' On Empty" for real, but then again, i'm sure there must be a rush involved. Aha. Rush! That's another one!

Daddy G. you're free to speak your mind in here, so is anyone else. But it's something that's been established years ago, (ever since there's been multi continental participation in Yellow and such) there's stuff we find alliance in and there's stuff we see from different points of view. In some regards our nationalities seem to shine through, so we speak from our respective cultural angles and differences. It's interesting though, as always, in what ways we define our identity as being related to the countries we were born in, or where we grew up, or the tongues we speak.

Would amnesia bring out the true meaning of one's existence and reveal life and identity as an entity of circumstance and chance rather than fate?

I wrote that last post somewhat hastily and I just want to "edit" the first couple paragraphs:

I just gotta say... don't mistake your perception of Americans (or American politics and American foreign policy) for the demeanor and intentions of Americans in general. You couldn't be more wrong.

I'm not proud of everything that is officially done with an American flag attached or everything that some Americans say or do, but I am indeed proud to BE an American. The good far outweighs the bad, both present day and in history. Nobody that I know of has ever claimed America is perfect.

(Sorry 'bout that. Just trying to clarify a little.)

To whom it may concern...

Just as a church is not the building of brick, mortar, and wood, but the flock, so too is a country it's citizenry, not just it's geographical borders and leaders. I for one do not come on these boards and preach the American "gospel" as a rule, so please forgive me if just this once (I really don't want to see this board become as political as the Yellow) I do have this to say.

I have never ever felt the need to apologize for being an American. For one thing I can't help it, I was born and raised here. And for another I choose to see the good as well as the bad and the ugly and I think the good is the biggest slice of Americana.

In saying all this I'm NOT trying to imply that America is superior to other nations. I'm sure Sweden is a wonderful land, the Netherlands too, and ditto for any other nations that folks happen to call home, either by birth or adoption. I suppose that sometimes something I post might be considered American-centric, but I can't help that because, well, I'm an American, it's simply part of who I am.

I'm sorry to go on like this, but I do get so tired of some of the seeming Anti-American baiting which goes on from time to time on various boards. I can understand where much of it stems from---America is seen as a the big bad bully (and admittedly there are many good reasons for that view) these days and nobody likes that. I get that. Heck, to cite a far less significant example I dislike the NY Yankees for that same reason. But I don't go around baiting NY Yankee fans (and I do have friends who are Yankees fans) just because they choose to root for them.

So please, on the one day when Americans celebrate and reflect on their history and what made/makes their nation great in their eyes, just let us have our day... Thank you.

And by the way, it is generally understood that the term "America" is the short and sweet version of the mouthful that is "the United States of America." North, Central, and South America are continents or regions, but "America" is understood and accepted by most rational folks to mean the organized country. It is not an attempt to raise ourselves above the other so-called Americas. It's just shorthand, a convenience---that's all. After all, people don't walk around referring to "the People's Republic of China," do they? No, they simply say "China" and the meaning is clear.

Thanks. I've had my say. Have a nice day. Peace to all, Americans and everyone else.

(And I'll try hard to make that all I have to say on the subject.)

hey! Coral Egan, yes representing Canada on the World Expo in Japan. I completely forgot about it :-)

And Bruce Cockburn. Nigey Lennon once sent me a link to a musician, Andy Milne (also Canadian-born)... he worked with Bruce or is it the other way around... anyhoooo, it's somewhere in the Lounge archives or the old Mizar5...
What ß said. About the "new" bands and their irrelevance. And older acts as pertinent. I'd say consistent. Watching a band like Uriah Heep, i didn't expect to hear them sing so flawlessly, strong voices, good harmonies. Trevor Bolder slapped real snappy lines. And their interaction with the audience was as Kandinsky would have called it, a "reciprocal agreement". So why bother looking at a band named Scissor Sisters (who?) from New York and realize they're tiring...

That was a sampling of Bruce Cockburn's politically engaged poetry down there, yes. It was one of the few moments I've heard that actually had a clear statement to make through the music, one actually in the spirit of the event.

Hey C. Must b ß, i could check the "high pee" but nope, won't be doing that :-)
Caught a little of the Live Aid shows on TV... There was a lot of music going about this globe's spheres... Who knows the vibes will suit the old planet's spin it's been spinning for ages beyond mankind's knowledge. Nice edge in your review, ß.

Padded with power here they come
international loan sharks backed by the guns
of market hungry military profiteers
whose word is a swamp and whose brow is smeared
with the blood of the poor

Who rob life of its quality
who render rage a necessity
by turning countries into labour camps
modern slavers in drag as champions of freedom

Sinister cynical instrument
who makes the gun into a sacrament --
the only response to the deification
of tyranny by so-called "developed" nations'
idolatry of ideology

North south east west
kill the best and buy the rest
it's just spend a buck to make a buck
you don't really give a flying fuck
about the people in misery

IMF dirty MF
takes away everything it can get
always making certain that there's one thing left
keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

See the paid-off local bottom feeders
passing themselves off as leaders
kiss the ladies shake hands with the fellows
open for business like a cheap bordello

And they call it democracy

money it's a hitch
Sunday, July 3rd 2005 - 12:07:12 PM
I did catch some of the shows during the day.

My personal highlight was in Barrie, mid-afternoon, when Bruce Cockburn was having his merry way with his acoustic guitar in a flat-out fall-on-your-ass display of chops. I mean like soloing and thumbing the bass line all at once, the works. That was one fine rendition of "If I had a rocket launcher" you had to hear. If it's not on the upcoming record, you've been had. But it'll be for a good cause. And listening to his little stripped down set, I thought most of his songs of protest seem to have gained a new actuality, especially "Call It Democracy" and the aforementioned.
So The Barrie Ontario show had its moments, managed to keep my attention interminently, for a while. At one point Neil Young came on and I had to take a leak, just long enough gone to lose my grasp on the remote control. Them little ones, they don't care like it's frightening, eh? No respect...
And Steve Morse with Deep Purple... what monster technique. The guy's left hand stretches a good octave at rest, and surely could cover the entire fretboard on a dare. Really, he kinda looked like Stretch Armstrong, the buff yet extensible action figurine of old.
Also caught others, Tragically Hip, Barenaked ladies, Motley Crue, those infamous girlie men who sang West End Girls in Moscow.
Darn, I missed P. Diddy.

The Long And winding Road as always remains a tear jerker, especially with the shots of little african babies struggling to walk on a dirt road. To me it's the absolute all-time ballad, that one. I must be a pussy. Really, Sir Paul has to be the one who struck a deal with the devil. Look the other guys have either died or gotten senile while he just keeps getting younger everyday. Fishy...
Pink Floyd? Getting old and fat and gray like it's a little sad. They should call Paul for Satan's number, those guys. You're better off dropping acid in your room with your old vinyls, and keep your visions intact, your imagos of omniscient and omnipotent gods there. And you could say that for quite a few acts. Stevie Wonder was escorted off the stage not because he's blind, but chiefly, I suspect, 'cause he's too old and too fat.
Still the old acts are the ones who sounded most pertinent. The newer ones, tired and irrelevant. Coldplay? exhausted and sad... at 22!

"We don't want your money, we want your name..." so we can make poverty history by directly collecting your tax dollars later on instead?
That seems to be the angle. Fair enough. Bono want a cracker. He can't bear to be rich and traveling worldwide only to witness people are dying dirt poor all over. It's ruining his rock and roll bacchanal dreams. He's gonna belt out a timely chestnut now, feel better.
Like every three seconds, a child dies needlessly, it is true. But every two seconds, it's a million squids more in Elton's pocket! And that remains the bottom line on the morning after.

Hey Daddy G. and ß, that's another Dutch tribute band, this time in the eastern part of the country. Well, tomorrow i'll probably hear some SD covers too in Bospop Weert, that festival? Peter Frampton, Uriah Heep, Steve Lukather, Joe Cocker etc. But it starts with a couple of dutch bands, one of them rehearsing SD tunes especially for this festival. We'll see :-)

Off now. And Gaucho says hi...

Hi. Well, it did start again yesterday but luckily not as heavy as before and no fierce electricity stuff floating about space :-)

On another note, the link above is to an impressive documentary from a young Arab woman, Ebtisam Mara'ana who filmed in her homevillage Fureidis (which is Paradise in the Arabic language) overlooking the Mediterranean. One of the few if not the last Arab villages left after the war in 1948. She travels to London as well, to meet with Suaad George who once lived in Fureidis but was banned because of her activities. Suaad studied International Law and does miss being home... It's looking from the inside out and quite rare in its form and presentation. It's also shown in the United States, in Georgetown:

The skies are turning grey as i write this. Last night we had one of the fiercest thunder & lightning storms ever. It was even scary and although it was hot i was hiding under the covers in bed, coldsweat all over. Electricity is such a weird, fascinating omni-present energy. What scared the wits out of me was the sight and sound of electric fields IN the house. I saw a blue beam or line crawl up on the wall and kind of travel along the roof until it disappeared. And the sound, it was like the sound a zillion sparks would make when ignited or something. This the first time these weather conditions freaked me out :-)
But anyhow, anyway...makes you in total awe for the forces of Nature!

So we're like notes in a regular scale now, or perhaps irregular? I'd vote for the chromatic scale because it's a half-step. Never really was one for the quick-step. Rumba, mambo, foxtrot, the old-fashioned waltz in Tennessee perhaps... Just watched "Nobody's Business" a documentary by Alan Berliner. It's refreshing. Particularly liked the way it was edited. Like clockwork. Literally. His father, Oscar A. Berliner was funny in his comments during this movie about the family history and Alan's search for things...
Took my mind off the Mizar5 stuff for a while. Needed a break. It can be so surreal sometimes. Especially when you're confronted with some of the online minds out there. To breathe in REALTIME air and then cyber air... Adios me says :-) Funny. And so life shows itself in many shapes and forms. Never liked practizing scales BUT the chromatic ones...

"Acned Melanie takes her blow of cocks like a queen, if 25.000 loudspeakers howl through all the echoes, over all the roofs, suddenly that it is Melanie the incomparable one... A minimum of originality, but enormously of advertisement and base. The being, the bowel, the object in question of publicity on which will flow massive propaganda, must be above all with the departure, also smooth, also unimportant as possible. Painting, the beating-advertising executive will be spread on it of as much better than it will more carefully be deprived of asperities, of any originality, than all its surfaces will be absolutely plane. That nothing in it, at the beginning, can cause the attention and especially the controversy. Publicity for giving all its magic effect well, should be obstructed, retained, be diverted per nothing. It must be able to affirm, crown, vociferate, mégaphonize the worst stupidities, any himalayesque, brainless, thundering phantasmagoria... in connection with cars, stars, toothbrushes, writers, light singers, trusses, without nobody ticking... rising with the floor, the tiniest naive objection. It is necessary that the floor remains perfectly hypnotized in time of connerie."

It's so strange. Crosby Stills and Nash played Stockholm a couple of weeks ago. Not a newspaper reviwed the concert. It's the same when James Taylor or J Browne plays this little country, not the smallest notice.

Springsteen played acoustic in Gothenburg and Stockholm last week, and he's all over the newspaper.

Strange.

Says Cristopher Cross when answering the question where he got the inspiration to the song "Sailing":

When Christopher was young, he had a friend that used to invite him to go sailing in Texas. Christopher enjoyed the activity as a way to get away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. As he said on the Howard Stern radio show, if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it -- the song could have actually become "Bowling".
